The International Garden Show 2013 ( IGS 2013 for short ) took place from April 26, 2013 to October 13, 2013 in Hamburg on the Elbe island of Wilhelmsburg .

history

Hamburg applied for the IGS 2013 in 2001 . Hamburg provided a budget of around 70 million euros for the design of the site. In November 2005, RMP Stephan Lenzen Landschaftsarchitekten was selected as the winner in the implementation competition. The planning was criticized because of the associated permanent destruction of urban spontaneous vegetation with the felling of at least 2,228 trees. The compensatory measures in the east of the Elbe island replaced the “existing meadow landscape” with “artificial nature” in the form of tree plantings.

The 2013 International Garden Show was opened on April 26th in the presence of Federal President Joachim Gauck and Hamburg Mayor Olaf Scholz . It was the fourth garden show in Hamburg (previously: 1953, 1963, 1973). Access to the garden show was located near the Wilhelmsburg S-Bahn station.

In July 2013, Hamburg.de reported that only a third of the expected visitors had visited the exhibition of the horticultural industry. In its 2012 annual report, the Court of Auditors of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg had expressly warned against a drop in income due to excessive visitor numbers (in the feasibility study 2001, 5 million visitors were expected, later only 2.5 million). The Court of Auditors is assuming total costs of EUR 154 million. The budgeted revenue surplus could not be realized in view of the low number of visitors (1.05 million in total). Rather, there was a deficit of 37 million euros, which is to be financed through reallocations from the city budget.

Large parts of the site became a public park on October 14, 2013 ( Wilhelmsburger Inselpark ). The cost of his care for 2014 was given as 1.4 million euros.

In 2014 the Association of Taxpayers listed the IGS 2013 in its black book Public Waste . As the cause of the financial loss, he particularly criticized the consistently high admission prices despite the low number of visitors and the inadequate marketing.

The garden show grounds

The motto was "Around the world in 80 gardens". There were seven themed worlds at the IGS: world of movement, world of ports, world of continents, world of cultures, world of religions, natural worlds and water worlds. The attractions also included the cultural landscapes, the United Nations Park, the Rose Boulevard, the allotment gardens, hall shows, the Wälderhaus and the Reiherstieg.

A monorail from the manufacturer Intamin Bahnechnik Rüscheid drove through the approximately 100 hectare garden show grounds on a 3.4 km long, elevated circuit (rail height 4 to 6 meters) with three stops: at the main entrance, at the Wasserwerk garden restaurant and at the cultural landscapes. The trains, each with 66 seats, reached a top speed of 16 kilometers per hour .

Immediately next to the main entrance is the new Inselpark indoor pool with a 25-meter pool, diving board and children's area. In good weather, the south front of the hall opens onto a lawn for sunbathing.

The flower hall next to the indoor swimming pool was converted into a sports arena at the end of the exhibition and has since been home to the Bundesliga basketball team Hamburg Towers . As a result of a sponsorship agreement , it has been called Edel-optics.de Arena since May 2017 , previously it was known as the Inselparkhalle .
