The Federal Garden Show 1969 took place from April 25 to October 12, 1969 in Dortmund and was also called Euroflor .

prehistory

Initially, the city of Frankfurt am Main successfully applied for the Federal Horticultural Show in 1969. Due to the financial difficulties of Frankfurt, however, canceled in September 1965. Dortmund then stepped in, which had a suitable area from the 1959 Federal Horticultural Show with the Westfalenpark , which could be used relatively quickly for another Federal Horticultural Show. The Westfalenpark was expanded by 10 hectares for the second federal garden show held here  .

The area of the garden show covered 70 hectares. Home garden design , balcony greening and potted plants were the focus. A lake was created on the expansion site, the "water heart", the water level of which changes constantly. The awning in the middle of the park was an architectural attraction. It was designed by Günter Behnisch and it is the prototype of a self-supporting roof structure. The roof over the Olympic Stadium in Munich, completed in 1972, was built based on his model .

Westfalenparkbahn

The park railway (today: Westfalenparkbahn ) and the chairlift of the Federal Garden Show 1959 were taken over. A ferris wheel was added as an attraction.

Result

5 million visitors came in the 171 days that the exhibition lasted. In retrospect, the exhibition with its central themes of home garden design, balcony greening and potted plants missed the zeitgeist , which was shaped by the 1968 movement and the first moon landing , which took place on July 21, 1969, while the Federal Horticultural Show was running in 1969 .

A permanent element of Euroflor was the intensive rose planting , from which the German Rosarium , which continued to exist after the exhibition ended, was created.

Worth knowing

On the grounds of the Federal Horticultural Show of 1969, another followed, the Federal Horticultural Show in 1991 .
