Container plants are mostly indigenous perennial or potted plants originally from the tropics and subtropics . Compared to potted plants, the size of the vessels of potted plants is more than the size of a flower pot .

use

Container plants are mainly used as decoration in outdoor and transitional areas. This tradition is particularly well known from the Mediterranean region , where plants have been cultivated in terracotta pots since ancient times . Since the 16th century, they have also become increasingly popular north of the Alps with the spread of garden art and orangeries .

In earlier centuries, gardeners transported valuable potted plants outside after the long winter months.

They are mainly found on roof gardens , balconies and terraces as a design element or miniature garden with little space requirement. Plants and planters come individually or as arrangements. A special form from Japan is the bonsai .

maintenance

In Central Europe, potted plants that are not hardy must be brought inside the house in winter. Plants in pots that are hardy can definitely survive the cold season outside, such as boxwood or various other deciduous and coniferous trees. In summer, artificial irrigation is necessary, especially during longer dry periods.

Trivia

The Fockea crispa from Schönbrunn is considered to be the oldest potted plant in the world.
