Roof garden
A roof garden is a roof terrace or a flat roof with plants.
Structural conditions
The prerequisite is a solid ceiling with sufficient load-bearing capacity and the impermeability required for drainage. A vapor barrier is first applied to the raw ceiling . This is followed by thermal and impact sound insulation . The next step is a root-proof moisture barrier layer made of bitumen sheeting or plastic sheeting , on which the drainage layer and then the mother earth and the paving slabs laid on a layer of sand are located.
Roof planting
The spread of roof gardens for private houses and commercial buildings has recently been promoted by the tendency towards flat roofs. The roof greening is carried out according to the usual horticultural rules, but the thickness of the soil layer and thus the size of the plants is limited for weight reasons. Selected, mostly low-growing plants are usually in pots, tubs or other containers, surrounded by lawns or beds with flowering plants; Small water basins are also possible in lavishly designed gardens.
Community roof garden
Joint roof garden design and maintenance on residential buildings can make a contribution to increasing the quality of life and living as well as strengthening neighborhood help. A roof garden as an additional urban green area thus forms an attractive social meeting point for the residents of the house in question. Whether a roof garden can also be used jointly by an apartment owners' association depends on the declaration of division. This can also provide for the exclusive use of one or more apartment owners.
Regional names
In Frankfurt am Main , green roof terraces are known as belvederchen , in Switzerland they are called pinnacles.
