Belvederchen (in dialect Belvederche ) is a common term in Frankfurt am Main for a green roof garden . Many houses in Frankfurt's old town , which was destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main in 1944 during the Second World War , had such roof gardens. In the densely populated, narrow and treeless streets of the city, the Belvederchen formed an important recreational opportunity for the citizens.

The most famous belvedere was that of the Haus zur Goldenen Waage , a half-timbered house built between 1618 and 1619 in the Renaissance style . Similar Dachausbauten example, there were still at the house for Schildknecht on Hühnermarkt 18 , the House for Holderbaum and Hirschberg in Saalgasse 30 and the as Gewürzhaus known house for white cock on Krautmarkt 5 to find. In the course of the reconstruction of the old town as part of the Dom-Römer project from 2014 to 2017, the belvedere of the Goldene Waage was rebuilt, and other new buildings such as Schildknecht (Markt 18) and Kleines Seligeneck (Markt 16) were given small roof gardens.

The name is a diminutive of Belvedere . The diminutive suffix -chen has no pejorative function in the Frankfurt dialect , but expresses closeness and familiarity.
