Aluminum and plastic film

A film is a homogeneous flat structure made of very thin metal or plastic. Foils are used as a cover (e.g. covering in construction ), sealing (e.g. roof sealing ), packaging or adhesive (e.g. furniture film ). Foils can also be processed into other storage media (e.g. bags ).

The word has been used in German since the 16th century and was borrowed from the Middle Latin folia ("metal leaf"), which goes back to the Latin folium ("leaf"). This meant metal flakes that were used as a base for gemstones to emphasize their shine.
