The 1967 Federal Horticultural Show took place in Karlsruhe from April 14 to October 23, 1967 .

planning

Encouraged by the positive urban development effects of federal horticultural shows in the reconstruction of other cities destroyed in World War II, Karlsruhe commissioned Walter Rossow to provide an expert opinion in 1961 on whether and how a federal horticultural show was also possible in Karlsruhe. This was followed by an ideas competition in 1962 . In the same year a contract was signed between the city and the Zentralverband Gartenbau e. V. closed for the horticultural show. Four working groups were formed from the winners of the ideas competition, each of which was responsible for designing a section of the site. In addition, a green approach to the entire city was developed, the main railway station , Imperial Road , Festival Square and Castle Association. The then Lord Mayor Günther Klotz campaigned intensively for the success of the Federal Garden Show.

The 1967 Federal Horticultural Show was essentially spread over two areas in the city, which together had a size of 90 hectares :

  1. The city garden (including the zoo , which, however, was partially relocated to the newly built Oberwald zoo for the Federal Garden Show in order to create garden areas .).
  2. The gardens at the palace: palace gardens, palace square and Fassanengarten.

In the Waldstadt there was also a group of 22 single-storey residential buildings with differently designed gardens in sizes between 54 m 2 and 204 m 2

The Federal Garden Show was opened by Federal President Heinrich Lübke . A central concern of the exhibition was the greater integration of green spaces into the city center in order to promote health and leisure opportunities. This was particularly important in Karlsruhe in view of the strong population growth of the previous decades and the associated expansion of residential and industrial areas.

A park railway was set up for the Federal Horticultural Show, which continued to operate and is still running today.

Rating

The Federal Garden Show in Karlsruhe was a complete success - not least because of the long, beautiful weather in the summer of 1967. Before Christmas 1966, 82,000 season tickets had been sold, a total of 126,000. Mathematically, every second Karlsruhe resident had a season ticket. A total of 6.3 million visitors came after 4 million had originally been expected. The two main exhibition areas of the 1967 Federal Horticultural Show were among the most popular green spaces in Karlsruhe even after they had finished.
