The Hamburg Towers are a basketball team from Hamburg that has played in the second-highest German league ProA since the beginning of the 2014/15 season and was promoted to the basketball Bundesliga at the end of the 2018/19 season . The team is operated by Hamburg Towers Basketball-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH, founded in 2013, whose shareholders are Jan Fischer , Jochen Franzke, Tomislav Karajica and Marvin Willoughby . Its managing directors are Jan Fischer and Marvin Willoughby.

history

2001–2008: Prehistory

The last time there was Bundesliga basketball in Hamburg was in the 2001/02 season, when BCJ Hamburg played in the 2nd Bundesliga basketball division . However, this team had to file for bankruptcy due to financial problems. Attempts in the following years to build a new professional team in the city were ultimately not implemented. From 2005 onwards, under the management of TSG Bergedorf, an attempt was made to build a team in the 1st regional league with Baskets Albag Hamburg, financially supported by the Berlin company ALB AG (Allgemeine Liegenschaft und Beteiligungsaktiengesellschaft) , which should make the leap into the professional field in the future . According to Jan Pommer , the manager of the Basketball Bundesliga at the time , the league was “benevolent towards this project”. The will of the Bundesliga to support the establishment of first division basketball in the Hanseatic city was also expressed by the fact that the league awarded the final tournament for the BBL Cup 2006 to Hamburg for five years. The Baskets Albag Hamburg did not get beyond the regional league, and the interest expressed in 2008 by US entrepreneurs Henry Feinberg and Steven M. Julius in establishing a professional basketball team in Hamburg also fizzled out.

At the same time, from the mid-2000s onwards, a group around Marvin Willoughby developed the idea of promoting basketball in Hamburg and organized basketball camps for young people, among other things. In addition to Willoughby, there were two other professional basketball players, Darko Krezic and Zoran Krezic , and Jan Fischer and other people also belonged to the group, which founded the association “Sport ohne Grenzen” in 2006 and offered mass sports for children in the Wilhelmsburg district in particular . “A lot of people call it social work. I didn't feel like a classic social worker, ”Willoughby said later. "We always wanted to achieve the level of performance that we could work with the best young people from Hamburg," he said, describing the desired connection. Thanks to the money he had put aside as a professional athlete, Willoughby, who last played as a professional in the 2004/05 season and then had to quit due to injury, said he was able to take care of the further development of the club and the ideas in the early years . “I could - and I indulged myself in the luxury - say to myself: First of all, I want to do what I want for three or four years and not what makes the most money. And it was also important for our work that there was no economic pressure behind it, especially at the beginning, ”he said later. From 2009, “Sport without Borders” expanded its competitive sports concept with the Pirates Hamburg (see section Pirates Hamburg ).

2013–2014: foundation

In February 2013, the former national basketball player Pascal Roller, together with the entrepreneur Wolfgang Sahm and the advertiser Gunnar Klink, announced that there were concrete plans for a future first division basketball team under the name Hamburg Towers. In September 2013, Roller and Marvin Willoughby presented the project, meanwhile the Hamburg Towers Basketball-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH had been founded. In addition to Sahm, a second entrepreneur, Jochen Franzke, acted as managing partner. In January 2014, Roller was appointed managing director, while Sahm resigned from this position.

Originally, they wanted to apply for a wildcard for the basketball Bundesliga , but due to the lack of a main sponsor, these plans were abandoned. Instead, they took part in the wildcard procedure for the second highest league, ProA. Eligibility to participate in the ProA season 2014/15 was granted in June 2014. The establishment of the professional team Towers was seen as the roof of the youth sport promotion and social work carried out in previous years by Willoughby and his colleagues within the framework of the Inselakademie Wilhelmsburg, Sport ohne Grenzen eV and Piraten Hamburg.

2014–2018: ProA

The first Towers coach in the club's history was Hamed Attarbashi , after Denis Wucherer had initially been a preferred candidate, but he canceled. The first official competitive game was won at the end of September 2014 against the Gießen 46ers with 66:65. The home game premiere followed in October against Bayer Leverkusen. The first season of the Towers ended with 15 wins and 15 defeats in eighth place in the table. In the subsequent play-offs, the team met the s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg in the quarter-finals and were eliminated with 3-0 wins. In May 2015, Pascal Roller gave up his position as managing director of the Towers and justified this step with different sporting and economic views on the future direction of the location.

Away game against the Dresden Titans in the 2016/17 season

In the 2015/16 season , the Towers reached the play-offs in fifth place and were eliminated in the quarter-finals with 2: 3 wins against the Oettinger Rockets from Gotha . In December 2016, Tomislav Karajica, who initially joined the Towers as a sponsor in 2013 and later became the main shareholder, was given the power of attorney to Hamburg Towers Basketball-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH. In January 2017 the co-partner and press spokesman Jan Fischer replaced Jochen Franzke as the second managing director alongside Marvin Willoughby. Franzke initially remained a partner.

The 2016/17 season closed the Towers in ninth place in the table and thus missed the qualification for the play-offs. With an average of 3,047 spectators per home game, the Towers had the highest average attendance in the league this season.

With a view to the 2017/18 season , “the best team in the history of the Towers was put together,” as sporting director and managing director Willoughby emphasized to the Hamburger Morgenpost in July 2017 . In the same interview, he named “a place in the top four” as a goal. In mid-February 2018, head coach Attarbashi and the hamburgers split up prematurely after there had been only one win from ten games and the team had slumped to tenth place in the table. Attarbashi's successor was his previous assistant, Benka Barloschky . At the end of the season, the Towers occupied tenth place in the table and thus again missed qualifying for the play-offs.

2018–2019: Promotion to the Bundesliga

In May 2018, the American Mike Taylor was hired as the new head coach, who had looked after the German clubs Chemnitz and Ulm in his previous coaching career. Barloschky returned to the position of assistant coach. With the new coach, the Hamburg team hoped to achieve the desired promotion to the basketball Bundesliga . "We worked a lot over the summer and now want to play for promotion," said sports director Willoughy immediately before the start of the 2018/19 season from the Hamburger Morgenpost . The team has been rebuilt, more money is being spent on coach and team than ever before, said Willoughby about the personnel changes. In a survey conducted by the 2nd Bundesliga before the first competitive game as a Towers coach, Taylor answered the question of which team would win the championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA in September 2018: “The Hamburg Towers. We have the club that is most ready for the Bundesliga and a squad that is ready to pursue our dream goal. ”During the season, the goal of advancing to the Bundesliga was confirmed by the sporting management.

In January 2019, a main sponsor was found for the first time in the club's history with the logistics company VTG . In the 2018/19 game year, the Hanseatic League moved into the championship round as fourth. On April 30, 2019, Hamburg's athletic promotion to the basketball league was clear after they beat Chemnitz away from home in the fifth and final game of the semi-final series with 78:72. The best man in the most important meeting in the club's history was Carlton Guyton with 28 points. After the Hamburg Freezers and HSV handball professional teams from the Hanseatic city had ceased operations in previous years , the rise of the Towers was described by the Hamburg Senator for Interior and Sport Andy Grote as a “new chapter for sport in Hamburg”. In the first final against Nuremberg, Hamburg lost 87:90 away, and they won the final second leg with 99:94 and thus achieved the championship title. 18-year-old Justus Hollatz hit the decisive three-point throw in the final seconds of the second leg . Shortly after winning the championship, the Hamburgers were granted the license for the 2019/20 Bundesliga season "with a condition subsequent".

2019-2020: First year as a Bundesliga team

After promotion to the Bundesliga, the team was changed in parts, even if seven players from the championship such as Beau Beech and Tevonn Walker were retained . The sporting leadership relied on signing newcomers who, according to coach Taylor, were “still largely unknown”, but had the prospect of asserting themselves in the Bundesliga. A peculiarity in the run-up to the first year in the Bundesliga resulted from Taylor's simultaneous activity as coach of the Polish national team, with which the American was preparing for the World Cup, during the redesigned line-up of the Towers during this time by the assistant coaches Benka Barloschky and Austen Rowland was looked after. When naming a goal for the premiere game year, sporting director Willoughby waived the stipulation of relegation, which is common for a newcomer: “We don't want to declare a negative goal, we don't want to not relegate. That's just an attitude we have. We know where we come from, we know that we are on the rise, but we don't want to approach with an attitude: 'We are not good enough for you anyway and we are fighting for our lives.' ”In the future, so Willoughby, you should look for them Participation in the playoffs. "I don't know whether we will make it in the first year, but of course we are going in there with the aim of making it," said the Sports Director of the Hanseatic League in the run-up to the 2019/20 season. Towards the end of the preparation, a well-known man was signed with the former German national player Heiko Schaffartzik .

The first Bundesliga game in the club's history was clearly lost on September 30, 2019 against the reigning German champions FC Bayern Munich with 55: 111 (half-time: 17:58). After only two game days, the Towers parted ways with Point Guard Khalil Dukes for sporting reasons . The first win came on the third matchday away in Giessen (79:75). In December 2019, the Towers were named Hamburg's Team of the Year 2019 at the Hamburger Sportgala . At the end of April 2020, it was decided to end the Bundesliga season with ten teams due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The Hamburg team decided against participating in this final round after the game had been idle for weeks. At that time, Hamburg was in last place in the table, but due to the cancellation, the relegation rule was suspended. The contract with coach Taylor, under whose direction the team had recorded three wins and 17 defeats in the 19/20 Bundesliga season, was not subsequently extended.

2019–2020: With a new coach into the second Bundesliga year

Due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic , the Towers also experienced a crisis in which one was faced with big question marks, stated sports director and managing director Willoughy in June 2020: “The legal situation was not clear, economic questions were raised that would have really affected the existence of this company. "

At the end of June 2020, the Spaniard Pedro Calles was introduced as the new Hamburg head coach. He signed a two-year contract. Sports director Willoughby described Calles, who had previously worked for Bundesliga competitor Vechta, as an “absolute dream candidate”.

Venue

Edel-optics.de Arena during a game of the Towers

The former flower hall of the 2013 International Garden Show , the edel-optics.de Arena ( Inselparkhalle until May 2017 ), which was converted into a sports hall after the garden show, is used as the venue . The hall is owned by the Benno and Inge Behrens Foundation and operated by InselAkademie Sport- und Schulungszentrum Wilhelmsburg GmbH, whose shareholders are also Jan Fischer, Jochen Franzke, Tomislav Karajica and Marvin Willoughby. The renovation costs amounted to 14 million euros, of which the Benno and Inge Behrens Foundation took on 6 million, the IBA Hamburg 4.5 million and the city of Hamburg 3.5 million. The capacity of the hall was initially 3,001 places and was increased to 3,400 places in April 2015.

After advancing to the Bundesliga in 2019, managing director Willoughby said that the goal of establishing himself in the midfield of the Bundesliga in the following years was "absolutely necessary" to move to a larger venue. If you want to get ahead of this goal, you need "twice as many people in the hall and twice as much space and twice as many opportunities," said Willoughby. In order to create a new home arena, the construction of an event hall in the south of Hamburg with up to 8,000 spectator seats was proposed, for which the corresponding plans were presented by Home United, which is headed by Towers main shareholder Karajica . However, no decision has yet been made about the implementation of the project.

Pirate Hamburg

The Piraten Hamburg are the high-performance youth teams of the Hamburg Towers in the age groups U16 and U19. They were founded in 2009 by the future Towers co-founders Marvin Willoughby and Jan Fischer together with other people. The Pirates have been playing in the youth basketball league (JBBL) since 2009 and in the youth basketball league (NBBL) since 2011 . They were initially supported by Sport ohne Grenzen e. V. , which was founded in 2006 by Willoughby, Fischer and fellow campaigners, and has been part of the Hamburg Tower eV since 2018

The cooperation clubs of the Pirates Hamburg are the SC Rist Wedel , the BC Hamburg , and the Bramfelder SV . The cooperation between the pirates and Wedel was expanded in 2014 by a cooperation between Wedel and the Towers, which means that young players with double licenses can be used at the Towers ( ProA or BBL ) and in Wedel ( ProB ). In 2014, Willoughby named the project with regard to the youth work: "We want to train two Hamburg boys for the ProA every year".

Well-known former players of Piraten Hamburg are İsmet Akpınar , René Kindzeka , Lennard Larysz , Jeffrey Martin , Louis Olinde , Osaro Jürgen Rich Igbineweka and Janis Stielow .

With the start of the 2019/20 season, the team name Piraten Hamburg disappeared. From then on, the games in the NBBL and JBBL were played as Hamburg Towers.

Youth work

In 2016, the Towers founded together with Vattenfall and Sport ohne Grenzen e. V. the Vattenfall Basketball Academy , within the framework of which school groups and school tournaments are held. After the professional team of the Towers rose to the Bundesliga in 2019, the sporting director Willoughby assured that he always wanted to combine the goals of the professional team with "very good youth work", which is very important in view of the history of the club, and named the Skyliners in this regard Frankfurt as a role model. In February 2020, Hamburg was announced as the first German venue for an NBA school league for children between eleven and 13 years of age under the direction of the Towers and in cooperation with the NBA, the German Basketball Association and the Hamburg Basketball Association.

Popular sport

In the summer of 2016, Hamburg Towers eV was founded and accepted into the Hamburger Sportbund . Thore Pinkepank became the first chairman. The registered club was given the same name as the professional team and built up a popular sports program with several youth teams; for the 2017/18 season, two leisure men’s, and later a women’s team, were added. The Piraten Hamburg and the young dance team are also part of the Hamburg Tower eV. The association also organizes camps on a regular basis. There, children and young people are introduced to the sport of basketball or can expand their knowledge.

The basketball teams of the Hamburg Towers eV take part in the games of the Hamburg Basketball Association . In summer 2019, Hamburg Towers also applied for membership in the Hamburg Football Association .

According to the sporting director Willoughby 2019, one is a club from the Wilhelmsburg district, “which hopefully can radiate into the city and beyond with work from the south of Hamburg and show that you can do it , Combine social and elitist issues such as competitive sport ”.

In summer 2019, Hamburg Towers eV received federal funding of 4.5 million euros for the construction of a club sports center. The neighborhood sports center is to be built in the Wilhelmsburg town hall district .
