The Hamburger Basketball-Verband (HBV) e. V. (abbreviated: HBV) is the umbrella organization of basketball clubs and sports clubs with basketball departments in Hamburg . In addition, several clubs from Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony in the Hamburg area are part of the HBV. Like all German regional basketball associations, the HBV is a member of the German Basketball Federation (DBB).

history

The Hamburger Basketball-Verband eV was founded on November 10, 1947 in the “Martini-Klause” restaurant. This means that the HBV is older than the German Basketball Association. Willi Gädcke became the first chairman of the Hamburg Association after it was founded.

In the 1980s, Gerd Brandt was the association's chairman. In April 2005, the then Bundesliga referee Boris Schmidt took over the office of HBV chairman, having previously worked for the association as Vice President for Finance. Schmidt's predecessor as president was Helge Oldach.

Members and gaming operations

In 2018, the Hamburg Basketball Association had 44 member clubs, a total of 6,474 members, of which 2,077 were women and 4,397 were men. 2854 members were young people. In the 2018/19 game year, the HBV organized games in 14 adult and 29 youth leagues. The top division in the adult division is the league, in the youth division the performance rounds. In addition, the HBV is the host of the national cup competition, a school tournament as well as a streetball and beach basketball tournament. In cooperation with the BG Harburg Hittfeld association, the HBV annually organizes a “rookie camp” for children aged eight to twelve.

Youth achievement promotion

The Hamburg Basketball Association is a cooperation partner of the Alter Teichweg elementary and district school in the Dulsberg district, which was recognized by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) in 2006 as an elite sports school. In 2010 the HBV was recognized by the German Basketball Association as a “young talent sports base”.

The support of the HBV includes, among other things, federal base training and assignments with the Hamburg selection teams. At national competitions and viewing events such as the Federal Youth Camp, the Hamburg Basketball Association forms a playing community together with the Schleswig-Holstein Basketball Association and the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Basketball Association .
