The Thuringian Basketball Association e. V. (TBV) is one of the 16 regional associations of the German Basketball Federation . It is the umbrella organization for basketball clubs and sports clubs with basketball departments in the state of Thuringia .

history

In the GDR , basketball was organized in Thuringia in the three districts of Gera , Erfurt and Suhl . After reunification , these districts were merged into the Thuringian Basketball Association. The TBV was founded on June 16, 1990 in Jena , the first chairman was Manfred Rosemann . On November 2nd of the same year, the association became a member of the German Basketball Federation together with the other newly founded East German associations . Dietmar Bendix was president of the TBV until 2009 , and Dirk Kollmar succeeded it in July 2009 . After Kollmar's death in May 2014, Bendix was again TBV chairman. In October 2018, Bendix announced its retirement from this position. Thomas Fritsche , Managing Director of USV Jena , was elected as his successor at the end of June 2019 .

Tasks and structure

According to the association's self-image, the TBV creates "the prerequisites for games in the field of youth and adults, promotes competitive sport for youngsters and popular sport and is always available to advise its member clubs". The top division of the association in the adult division is the league. Together with the Basketball Association of Saxony and the Bavarian Basketball Association , the TBV is a permanent member of the Regionalliga Südost . Furthermore, the TBV is responsible for organizing the state cup. The TBV has been cooperating with the Basketball Association of Saxony-Anhalt and the Basketball Association of Saxony in the youth sector since 2017 and offers the Mitteldeutsche Liga in the U12 and U14 divisions .

When it was founded in 1990, the TBV had 752 members in 28 associations. This number rose to over 3,000 members in the mid-1990s, and in 1997 the 50th association was added. In 2009 the TBV had around 1,500 members and 48 member associations. According to a survey by the State Sports Federation of Thuringia , as of March 2020 there were 3,896 members in 65 clubs.

Successful teams

The TBV's most successful team is Science City Jena ( TuS Jena until 2007 ), which played in the top German division, the basketball league , in the 2007/08 season and from 2016 to 2019 . With the Rockets from Gotha there was another Thuringian team in the German upper house in the 2017/18 season . After the direct relegation, however, the club withdrew from professional game operations. The Basketball Löwen Erfurt has been playing in the third-class ProB since 2018 .

Both TuS Jena and the Rockets (or their parent club BiG Gotha) made teams in the 2nd women's basketball league .
