The Basketball Association Rhineland-Palatinate e. V. (short: BVRP) is the umbrella organization of basketball clubs and sports clubs with basketball departments in Rhineland-Palatinate . The BVRP is a member of the state sports federation of Rhineland-Palatinate , the sport federations of Rhineland, Palatinate and Rheinhessen as well as the German Basketball Federation .

history

In 1935 Hermann Niebuhr founded the first basketball department within a German sports club at VfL Bad Kreuznach .

On June 1, 1949, the "Southwest German Basketball Association in the Rhineland Sports Association" was founded in Bad Kreuznach under the direction of Ernst Bauer as the forerunner of the Rhineland-Palatinate basketball association. In 1950 the name was changed to the Rhineland-Palatinate Basketball Association, whose first chairman was Bauer. From 1953 to 1956 Dieter Quast from Kirn was chairman of the BVRP. In 1960 the association had more than 1,000 members for the first time. In June 1960, the association's selection won the championship at the tournament of the German state associations for the first time. The team consisted of players from the clubs CVJM Kaiserslautern and TV Kirchheimbolanden .

In 1975, extensive structural changes were made within the association, including the reorganization of the game classes, and a collaboration with the Saar Basketball Association was initiated in order to jointly organize the game in certain leagues.

In 1988 Gerhart Aichert took over the office of chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate basketball association. By 1998 the number of BVRP members rose to more than 8,300 and 120 clubs. In 2012 Marco Marzi succeeded Aichert in the presidency, and in 2018 Reinolf Dibus took over the office. As of 2018, the association had 7 178 members and 119 member associations.

According to its statutes, the Rhineland-Palatinate Basketball Association sees itself as a "voluntary amalgamation of its district associations and all basketball clubs in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate."

Youth work

The BVRP has been running a training camp for girls and boys during the summer holidays since 1989. 36 young people took part in the first event in Rockenhausen , and 104 children took part in the 25th event of this kind in 2014 in Vallendar .
