The Landessportbund Rheinland-Pfalz (LSB) is the umbrella organization for sport in Rhineland-Palatinate, with its headquarters in Mainz . The first general meeting of the LSB took place on March 19, 1966 in the Koblenz Rhein-Mosel-Halle , at which August Zeuner was officially elected as the first chairman of the LSB. Since 1950 the mayor of Oberwesel had provisionally led the LSB. His successor on March 12, 1977 was Eugen Müller (Ludwigshafen), who passed the management on to Rolf Weiler (Lahnstein) on April 14, 1984. From January 17, 1997 to May 15, 2004, Professor Rüdiger Sterzenbach from Dierdorf was at the head of the country's largest association. At this general meeting in the ' Eltzer Hof ' congress center in Mainz , the building contractor Egon Heberger from Schifferstadt took over the fate of the state sports association, but resigned on April 6, 2006 for personal reasons. His successor Hermann Höfer fell ill shortly after his election as the sixth LSB President (September 23, 2006) and died on April 1, 2007. From 2008 to 2018, Karin Augustin was the first woman to head the largest association in Rhineland-Palatinate. At the general meeting on June 16, 2018, the professor of sports management at the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences Lutz Thieme was elected as the new president. Lutz Thieme resigned from his position on February 6, 2019. A few days later, Jochen Borchert was appointed acting president by the LSB presidium. He leads the LSB until the next general meeting in June 2020 and is also responsible for competitive sport in the country as the vice-president elected by the general meeting. More than 1.4 million members in over 6,000 sports clubs make the State Sports Association of Rhineland-Palatinate with the three sports associations the largest personal association in the state. The Landessportbund Rheinland-Pfalz is a member of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) .
