Lutz Thieme

Lutz Thieme (born September 28, 1966 ) is a German sports scientist , university professor and former president of the State Sports Association of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Life

Thieme, who practiced the sport of swimming at performance level, studied at the German University of Physical Culture in Leipzig from 1988 to 1990 , which he graduated from the University of Leipzig in 1992 as a certified sports teacher.

From 1991 to 1993, Thieme was a member of the founding and appointment committee of the sports science faculty at the University of Leipzig and represented the interests of the students in this committee.

From 1990 to 1994, Thieme worked as a freelancer for Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk , and in 1994 and 1995 he worked as deputy press spokesman for the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Regional Development. Between 1995 and 1998 he worked for the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe and from 1998 to 2001 at the Technical University of Dresden in the marketing department. During this time he completed his doctoral thesis (subject: "Approaches to environmental education in sports clubs") at the University of Leipzig.

In 2001 he took up a professorship for sports management at the Koblenz University (campus in Remagen ), and completed his habilitation in 2010 at the Saarland University with the topic “On the constitution of sports management as business administration in sports - development of a research program” .

From 2004 he had lectureships at the University of Koblenz-Landau and the Cologne Trainer Academy .

From 2005, Thieme was a board member at SSF Bonn 1905 and took over the office of chairman in 2012.

From 2013 to 2017, Thieme was treasurer on the board of the German Association for Sports Science .

From June 16, 2018 to February 6, 2019, Thieme was President of the State Sports Association of Rhineland-Palatinate .

His research activities focus on sports economics , including the economics of clubs, associations and funding institutions, and in sports development in cities. In addition, he led research projects on municipal sports funding, on the connections between sport and local politics, as well as on strategies of municipalities in the field of sport and city marketing.
