The Basketball Association of Saxony-Anhalt e. V. (BVSA) is the umbrella organization for basketball clubs and sports clubs with basketball departments in the state of Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The city of Halle an der Saale was already a basketball stronghold during the times of the German Democratic Republic , the SC Chemie Halle and KPV 69 Halle won multiple German championships.

After the dissolution of the German Basketball Association , the Basketball Association of Saxony-Anhalt was founded in Halle in May 1990, with Wolfgang Ockert becoming the first association president.

In 1990 the BVSA had 1996 members and 45 member associations, in 1991 there were only 1109 members in 27 associations. Until 1998 the number of members rose steadily to 3162 in 60 clubs, in the following years there was again a decrease to 1862 members (48 clubs) by 2011. In 2014, the 2000 mark was exceeded again (2027 members, 37 clubs).

From 1991 to 2002, Klaus Stöber managed the fate of the association as chairman. Bernd von der Heide was BVSA chairman from 2002 to 2012 and was appointed honorary president after his departure from office. In 2012 Thomas Schaarschmidt took over the office of BVSA chairman.

In addition to Halle, Weißenfels with the Central German BC and since 2006 also Bitterfeld / Sandersdorf / Wolfen with the BSW Sixers are among the strongholds within the basketball association of Saxony-Anhalt. Also, Magdeburg and Wolmirstedt are cities that have made nationally known the Saxony-Anhalt basketball.

Youth work

The state performance base is located in Halle; as part of a centralization process, it became the focus of the promotion of young talent within the BVSA in 2009, after a base was previously located in Magdeburg. From management level C, the association works closely with SV Halle and Mitteldeutscher BC to promote talent.

Like the Thuringian Basketball Association and the Basketball Association of Saxony , the BVSA is involved in the youth performance class "Mitteldeutsche Liga". This is seen as an "additional instrument for promoting young talent in competitive sport".
