The German Basketball Association (DBV) was the national basketball association of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Institutional development

After the end of the NSDAP regime, the German Sports Committee (DS) was founded in Berlin in 1948. Within this framework, the basketball / volleyball section was formed on December 18, 1950, from which the independent basketball section emerged on March 2, 1952.

The basketball section in the DS of the GDR was accepted as a member of the FIBA world association on July 21, 1952 . As of October 29, 1954, there were already 28 clubs with a basketball section in East Germany, after the Russian occupying power had largely dissolved all sports teams in 1945 due to their direct ties to the NSDAP.

Until the years 1953/1954 there was still an all-German game operation. At the European Men's Championship in Moscow in 1953 , an all-German selection even started.

From October 19, 1957, the basketball section finally changed its name to the German Basketball Association (DBV).

In 1957 the DBV had 1,648 members and 37 associations. These numbers grew to 14,298 members and 241 associations by 1989.

In 1969, leading competitive sports decision of the SED to the fact that the promotion of basketball has been set.

The DBV was dissolved in the course of the reorganization of the GDR during the turning point on October 20, 1990 with effect from November 3, 1990.
