The Åsbyblocket ( Samnordisk runtextdatabas Sö 324) is a rune stone on the roadside in the hamlet Åsby between the church of Helgarö and Björsund on the Helgarö peninsula in Strängnäs in Södermanland in Sweden .

Inscription and pictures

The stone is provided with a runic text and on two other sides with pictorial incisions. The runic inscription is clearly visible, but the text is uncertain. The scratching of the stone is considered an amateur as it is difficult to interpret the contents. The Gökstenritzung probably comes from him .

The man pictured could be a mythological figure. The representation corresponds to that of the giantess Hyrrokkin or Holdrykka on a stone of the Hunnestad Monument (DR 284) in Skåne . The boat in the background is taken as an indication of this.

Hyrrokkin was a giantess , according to Snorri Sturluson's Gylfaginning , who asked the sir to push Balder's death ship out to sea. Balders Hringhorni was the largest of all ships and was intended to serve as the funeral ship of God and his wife Nanna . Hyrrokkin did this so quickly that the friction set the ship on fire.

It is questionable whether the cross-carving on the head of the stone is original.

Surroundings

The entire peninsula is full of burial grounds . The distance to the burial ground at Ingjaldshögen is short - at the northern end is Rällingeborg .

Nearby is the rune stone from Kjula ås .
