Gökstenritzung

Drawing of the scratch

The Gökstenritzung ( Samnordisk runtextdatabas Sö 327) is on a rune block made of granite in Näsbyholm near Strängnäs in Södermanland in Sweden . Because of the bird motif it is also called "Gåssten" (goose stone). The block is known for its cluttered runes and rock carvings , which are considered a primitive copy compared to the similar Sigurd stones nearby.

The carving shows scenes from the life of the Nordic legendary hero Sigurd Fafnesbane . Outside the rune loop, at the lower edge, is shown Sigurd, who with both hands drills the sword Gram into the body of the dragon Fafnir . On the left above the noose is Fafnir's brother Otr , who was killed by Loki .

The blacksmith Reginn , Sigurd's foster father, is shown with a hammer in one hand and a sword in the other. An anvil and double bellows are shown in the upper corner. Below the blacksmith there is a falcon and a headless body, which is interpreted as the Reginn slain by Sigurd. In the center of the picture is the horse Grani , loaded with Fafnir's treasures, waiting for Sigurd. In the center of the picture is a large cross, as a sign that the carving comes from Christian times. On the far right, the snake's head is turned inward.

The inscription can only be partially interpreted, as the unknown rune master wanted to prove his skills through a puzzling script. It may also be that the scribe was not very knowledgeable because he wrote "erecting this stone" even though the scribing is in a stationary block of stone. The imaginative characters have nothing to do with the text, which was written in the second half of the 11th century. It reads:

"... (I) uraRi: hardly: isaio: raisti: stai: ain: þani: at :: þuaR: fauþr: sloþn: kbrat: sin faa… ul (i) • hano: msi"

There are two interpretations of the text:

  • “Roar, Gume's son, built this stone for Audar, Slode's father, and for his father. He exchanged gold in the land of the Semigalles. "
  • "Isaio set up the stone, alone, for Thuar, Slode's father, and Brand, his father ... (The runes scratched) Iurar in Barely."

Below the stone there are stone pieces with incisions that come from the block.

Comparable representations from the Sigurd saga are known of six other rune stones in Sweden, which are collectively referred to as Sigurd stones : Sö 101 , U 1163, Bo NIYR; 3, U 1175 , Gs 9 and Gs 19 .
