life and work

Mårten Stenberger's parents were the businessman Karl Nilsson Stenberger and Beda Kristina Stenberger (née Eriksson). He earned a master's degree in geography, geology, mineralogy, and Scandinavian and comparative archeology, but initially his main interests were geology. His dissertation with the title Öland under äldre järnåldern ( Öland during the older Iron Age ), published in 1933, is regarded as the first Swedish publication with a clear architectural archaeological orientation.

Stenberger participated in countless excavations. He spent the summers excavating Iron Age settlements on the Swedish island of Öland , and in the 1930s he joined a Danish expedition to Greenland , where he excavated houses from the Viking Age . From 1934 he spent summers on Öland and lectured in Uppsala in winter . From 1946 to 1950 he excavated a town with stone houses near Vallhagar on Gotland , and published the results in two extensive volumes in 1955.

From 1952 to 1965 he followed Oscar Almgren (1869-1945) and Sune Lindqvist (1887-1976) as professor of archeology at Uppsala University . He was succeeded by Bertil Almgren (1919–2011).
