Runestone from Stora Ramsjö

The runestone of Stora Ramsjö (also Ramsjösten ; Samnordisk runtextdatabas U 1175) is a runestone made of gray granite , which is located east of Morgongåva in the municipality of Heby in Uppland in Sweden . The height is 1.35 m and the width 0.85 m.

The stone has a circumferential inscription made of rune-like signs, crosses and angles. The text cannot be read and it is believed that the master of Ramsjösten did not want to write any text, possibly even not having mastered the runic alphabet. He came up with a serpentine ribbon with an elongated serpent's head, which is common on the Upplands rune stones. The area inside the snake band consists of a kind of paw cross surrounded by ornamental vines. Above the cross there is a figure scene with three human actors, the central figure being slightly larger and holding a sword that plunges into the serpentine ribbon. The central figure is believed to represent Sigurd Fafnesbane.

The decoration is also regarded as a copy of the rune stone from Altuna (U 1161), which, however, represents Thor's fishing expedition. Directly next to U 1175 is the rune stone U 1174 with text.

The creator of the U Ramsjösten 1175, of the so-called Sigurdsteinen belongs is an anonymous Runemasters . Comparable representations of the Sigurd saga are known from six other rune stones in Sweden: Sö 101 , Sö 327 , U 1163 , Bo NIYR; 3, Gs 9 and Gs 19 .
