Strängnäs (German obsolete Stregnes ) is a town in the Swedish province of Södermanland County and the historic province of Södermanland . It is the capital of the municipality of the same name .
history
Around the year 1080 the Holy Eskil came to the place and tried to prevent a pagan festival of sacrifice . He was then stoned by locals . Strängnäs Cathedral is now located on the former sacrificial site .
In 1120 Strängnäs was mentioned as Stringines for the first time as a bishopric . In 1275 it was written Strengines . The suffix -näs refers to the headland that extends into the Mälaren and on which the oldest parts of the city are located.
The first stone church was built around 1280. About 20 years earlier, a Dominican monastery had been established in the center of the village. In 1336 Strängnäs received city rights .
1520–1524 Olaus Petri was a deacon in Strängnäs and preached Reformation . On June 6, 1523 was Gustav Vasa in the cathedral for the Swedish royal chosen . On the occasion of this event, the Swedish national holiday is celebrated on June 6th.
Districts
Finninge is a district of Strängnäs with 3000 inhabitants. The area was built in the 1970s and consists mostly of villas and townhouses. There is a primary school here.
Culture and sights
The most important building in Strängnäs is the Strängnäs Cathedral . It was first built around 1250 as a wooden church, which was later replaced by a Gothic brick building. The second oldest grammar school in Sweden, the Thomasgymnasiet, is located in the village .
Another landmark of the city is the red, six-bladed windmill at the harbor from 1855, which overlooks the city.
economy
Strängnäs is a center of the pharmaceutical industry. Companies like Pfizer or AstraZeneca carry out their research here. In the company Leine & Linde are encoders manufactured. Furthermore, the place is the seat of the state lottery control authority. Until recently, a tank regiment was also stationed here.
