Mariefred is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Södermanland County and the historical province of Södermanland . It is located about an hour's drive southwest of Stockholm in the municipality of Strängnäs .

The place got its name from the Carthusian monastery Marienfred , founded in 1493 , on whose foundation walls the present village church was built in the 17th century.

Located on Gripsholmbucht des Mälaren is Gripsholm Castle , built in 1537 under Gustav Wasa , which houses the Swedish State Portrait Collection with around 2,000 exhibits. Since 1991 "medieval [correctly: early modern] tournament games" have been taking place there, as they were held here over 250 years ago. Värdshus has been on the outskirts for 400 years and is considered Sweden's oldest inn. On the way to the castle there are two Germanic rune stones .

Kurt Tucholsky's grave ( ), who emigrated from Germany to Sweden in 1929, is located in Mariefred's cemetery . This was preceded by a five-month stay near Mariefred in the summer of 1929, where he found the material for his “Summer Story”, Gripsholm Castle , published in 1931 . Also in the cemetery, an "Estonia bell" commemorates the sinking of the ferry " Estonia " in 1994.

In summer there are daily ship connections to and from Stockholm except Mondays by the steamer S / S Mariefred , which has been operating on the same route since 1903. The journey time is around 3½ hours, and berths on the route are Ekensberg and Sandviken on the Enhörna peninsula northwest of Södertälje . The steamer also makes trips to the “cake castle” Taxinge-Näsby .

Mariefred is the starting point of the Östra Södermanlands Järnväg , a 600 mm narrow-gauge railway. The railway is the oldest museum railway in Sweden.
