Mikael Samuelsson (born December 23, 1976 in Mariefred ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who was active for many years in the National Hockey League , playing for the New York Rangers , Detroit Red Wings , Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers , among others . With the Swedish national team he won the gold medal both at the 2006 Winter Olympics and at the World Championships in the same year .
Career
From 1996 he played in the Swedish Elitserien with Södertälje SK . He was drawn in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft at number 145 in the fifth round by the San Jose Sharks , but stayed in Sweden and moved to Västra Frölunda HC and the following year to Brynäs IF .
For the 2000/01 season he moved to North America and played mostly in the Sharks farm team , with the Kentucky Thoroughblades in the AHL , but four times he was also allowed on the ice in the NHL. The Sharks gave him to the New York Rangers after the season . After he played in the AHL farm team of Rangers, the Hartford Wolf Pack , at the beginning , he was able to assert himself in the NHL squad during the season. At the end of his second season, however, he was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins , which in return sent several players, including Alexei Kowaljow , to New York.
Shortly after the end of the season he was transferred to the Florida Panthers in an exchange of draft rights . After a year in Florida, the lockout followed , during which he played partly with his home team Södertälje SK , but also in Switzerland with Genève-Servette HC . He also started the upcoming season in Switzerland, but after a game for the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers , he signed a contract in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings .
He had a very good season in Detroit, scoring 23 goals and 22 assists , while the Red Wings took first place after the regular season. In addition, there was an Olympic victory and the world championship title with the Swedish national team at the international level . In 2006/07 Samuelsson was only able to play 53 games due to injury, but still scored 34 points scorer. In the playoffs, he helped the team with his three goals and eight assists in the final of the Western Conference.
In the 2007/08 season Samuelsson was again one of the reliable players in the attack of the Red Wings and scored 40 points. In the playoffs he was weak at first, but in the Stanley Cup final he found his good form again and scored three of his five goals from the finals in the series. The Red Wings finally won the final against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Samuelsson won the third title required for admission to the Triple Gold Club after the World Cup and the Olympic gold medal .
He continued his good performances in the 2008/09 season when he again collected 40 scorer points and moved into the Stanley Cup final with Detroit for the second time in a row, where the opponent were the Pittsburgh Penguins as in the previous year , however, the Red Wings failed to defend their title.
After four years with the Red Wings, Samuelsson left the team in the summer of 2009 and moved to the Vancouver Canucks . On October 23, 2011 he was returned to the Florida Panthers together with Marco Sturm in an exchange deal against Steven Reinprecht and David Booth . After only one year in Florida, Samuelsson returned to the Red Wings in the summer of 2012, but played only a few competitive games in the following two years due to numerous injuries.
In July 2014 he left the NHL and moved back to his home country to Djurgården Hockey . Following the 2014/15 season , Samuelsson announced his retirement due to injury.
