Laurentius Andreae also Lars Anderson, Laurentius Andreä, (* around 1470 in Strängnäs ; † April 14, 1552 ibid) was a Swedish theologian , statesman and reformer.

Live and act

Laurentius Andreae attended school in his hometown, then studied in Skara and Uppsala and subsequently became a canon in Strängnäs. Further university stays took him to Leipzig , Rostock and Greifswald and he visited Rome several times . In 1520 he became archdeacon of the Strängnäs diocese . The local deacon and cathedral school teacher Olaus Petri , who had studied in Wittenberg in 1518 , made him familiar with the teachings of Martin Luther .

When Gustav I. Wasa was elected king at the Diet of Strängnäs in 1523, he proclaimed him king at the cathedral there and was commissioned as its secretary to introduce Martin Luther's Reformation in Sweden. In doing so, he carefully and conservatively transformed the Swedish Church into a national Protestant institution. Together with Olaus Petri, he translated the New Testament into Swedish from 1526 , using Luther's template .

Around 1530 difficulties arose with the king, who did not tolerate criticism. When Andreae demanded greater freedom for the Church, the differences intensified. After the king wanted to abolish the office of bishop and establish a state church, Andreae was removed from his position in 1538. Thereupon both reformers withdrew, which, however, did not protect them from further pursuits. At a treason trial in Örebro , Andreae and Petri were charged with treason and sentenced to death on January 2, 1540. After multiple interventions, the king, Gustav I. Wasa, converted the sentence into a fine.

Andreae then withdrew to Strängnäs. Several times he was consulted by the king because of his expertise. He continued his work on the translation of the Bible into Swedish, which was published in 1541 as the Gustav Wasa Bible .

Retired, he died in 1552. His grave is preserved in the churchyard of Strängnäs Cathedral .
