The election of a king is the elevation of a candidate to king by a certain committee. While the succession of the king to the throne is regulated by succession in most cultures , there are also elective monarchies .

The choice of a king was found among other things in some Germanic successor states of the Roman Empire during the time of the Great Migration or in the early Middle Ages , in the Holy Roman Empire and in the Kingdom of Poland from 1573 to 1795 (see History of Poland , Period of the Noble Republic ).

Since the 13th century, only a limited number of imperial princes, the electors , had the right to elect a king in the Holy Roman Empire . There are various theories about the development of their exclusive right to vote.
