Leikanger is a former municipality that was incorporated into the municipality of Sogndal on January 1, 2020 . It was the administrative seat of the Norwegian province of Sogn og Fjordane , which was transferred to the newly created province of Vestland on January 1, 2020 . The administrative seat was Hermansverk . 2331 inhabitants lived on an area of ​​185 km² (as of January 1, 2019), the municipality number was 1419.

Leikanger was on the Sognefjord , the longest and deepest fjord in Europe. It bordered the then municipality of Balestrand in the west and Sogndal in the north. On the other side of the Sognefjord is the municipality of Vik . The climate in Leikanger is characterized by its coastal location. The highest point of the commune was at 1604  moh. on the Gunvordalsbreen glacier .

The majority of the municipality's population lived in the so-called Tettsted Hemansverk / Leikanger. Riksvei 55 ran along the Sognefjord through the municipality, connecting it to Riksvei 5 and thus connecting the area with European route 16 and European route 39 . There are express boat connections to Bergen , Sogndal and Flåm and a ferry connection to Balestrand and Vik.

history

The municipal boundaries of Leikanger have undergone several changes over time. In 1964, parts of the municipality Balestrand were incorporated and the area east of the Sognefjord was transferred to Vik . In 1992 the villages of Feios and Fresvik were also transferred to Vik. In addition, the area east of the Aurlandsfjord was assigned to the municipality of Lærdal .

As part of the state- wide municipal reform, Leikanger was incorporated into Sogndal together with Balestrand, but the administrative seat of Sogndal is now Leikanger. The merger took place against the will of the municipal parliaments of the municipalities involved. At the same time, the affiliation changed from the province of Sogn og Fjordane to Vestland, as Sogn og Fjordane was transferred to the newly created province of Vestland as part of the regional reform in Norway . After Hermansverk was the administrative center of Sogn og Fjordane, it also took on this function in the new province, but now together with the city of Bergen . Hermansverk is now the seat of the Fylkeskommune and the Fylkesmanns .

economy

Fruit and berries are grown along the Sognefjord and research is carried out in this area. The industry concentrated on the area around Hermansverk . The most important branches of industry were the graphics industry and the food industry. There are several fruit stores in Hermansverk. Tourism was also an important source of income for the municipality.

Since 1955 an overhead line with a span of 4850 meters has crossed the Sognefjord east of Leikanger. Until the construction of the overhead line crossing of Ameralik Fjord in Greenland, it had the longest cable span ever. Two other overhead line crossings east of the above also had cable spans of over four kilometers.
