Kjell Bondevik

Kjell Bondevik (born March 11, 1901 in Leikanger , Fylke Sogn og Fjordane , † December 21, 1983 ) was a Norwegian folklorist and politician of the Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF), who for 15 years was a member of the Storting 1963 Minister of Social Affairs in the government of Prime Minister John Lyng and Minister for Churches and Education in the government of Prime Minister Per Borten from 1965 to 1971 . He played a prominent role in religious organizations and in the efforts of the so-called Målsaken , a national-cultural struggle for a Norwegian written language and a distinctive Norwegian culture. Life

Studies, teacher and local politician

Bondevik, son of the postman Ola Bondevik and his wife Severina Stenehjem, attended the adult education center in 1917 and was one of the co-founders of the Norwegian Folklore Society (Norsk Folkeminnelag) in 1919 . In 1922 he began studying to become a teacher , which he completed in 1927 as Magister artium (Mag. Art.) And Candidatus philologiæ (Cand. Philol.). After taking the pedagogical examination, he took up a position as a teacher at the Kristelig Gymnasium in Oslo in 1927 and taught there until 1931. During this time he was chairman of the Christian Rural Youth League (Kristelige Landsungdomslag) in Oslo from 1930 to 1932, and he had been its vice-chairman since 1929 was.

In 1933 he took up a position as a lecturer at the secondary school in Haugesund and was subsequently lecturer at the grammar school and secondary school in Sauda between 1937 and 1948 . He was also involved from 1935 to 1938 as chairman of the Noregs Mållag association for the Karmsund region for the spread of Nynorsk as the second variant of the Norwegian language alongside Bokmål .

At the beginning of the Second World War Bondevik began his political career in local politics and was chairman of the Kristelig Folkeparti von Sauda from 1939 to 1947 and chairman of the KrF in Fylke Rogaland between 1939 and 1950 .

After the end of the war, he was a member of the Sauda municipal council between 1945 and 1951 and also chairman of the local culture committee from 1946 to 1949. He was also active as chairman of the Noregs Mållag association in Sauda between 1945 and 1947 . At the same time he was editor of Vegen vår , the organ of the Kristelig Folkeparti in Fylke Rogaland, between 1946 and 1950 , and was also a member of the KrF regional board from 1949 to 1955.

In 1948 he became rector of the grammar school and secondary school in Sauda and held this position until 1965.

Storting Member and Minister in the Lyng Government

As a candidate for the Kristelig Folkeparti, Bonevik was elected for the first time as a member of the Storting in the election of October 10, 1949 and represented the interests of Fylke Rogaland for more than 15 years until the election on September 13, 1965 .

During his membership in parliament he acted from January 11, 1950 to September 30, 1961 as secretary of the board of the KrF parliamentary group and between January 22, 1954 and September 30, 1961 as chairman of the social committee of the Storting. At the same time he was vice-chairman of the Kristelig Folkeparti from 1955 to 1961 and thus deputy of the party chairman Einar Hareide .

Subsequently, between October 1, 1961 and August 28, 1963, he was chairman of the KrF parliamentary group in Storting. On August 28, 1963, Bondevik was appointed by Prime Minister John Lyng as Minister of Social Affairs (Sosialminister) in his government, which he belonged to the end of Lyng's term only four weeks later on September 25, 1963.

He was then again chairman of the KrF parliamentary group in Storting from September 25, 1963 to September 30, 1965, before being appointed Minister of Churches and Education (Kirke and Undervisningsminister) by Prime Minister Per Borten on October 12, 1965 . He held this ministerial office until the end of Borten's term of office on March 17, 1971. In 1967 he became an honorary member of the Kristelig Folkeparti.

In addition to his political career as a member of parliament and minister, Bondevik was an examiner in folklore at the University of Oslo between 1958 and 1978 and at the same time lecturer in folklore at the University of Bergen from 1965 to 1970 .

In 1982 Bondevik received his first honorary doctorate from Tromsø University , which was founded in 1968 during his tenure as Minister of Education.

Bondevik's son was the clergyman Odd Bondevik , who was Bishop of Møre between 1991 and 2008 and President of the Church of Norway from 1998 to 2002 . His nephew was the politician Kjell Magne Bondevik , who was Prime Minister of Norway from 1997 to 2000 and again between 2001 and 2005.
