Per Borten (born April 3, 1913 in Flå, Trøndelag , † January 20, 2005 in Trondheim ) was a Norwegian politician ( center ) and Prime Minister from 1965 to 1971.
Borten began his political career as the mayor of Flå, which is now part of the Melhus municipality , in the Sør-Trøndelag province (1946 to 1955). Between 1945 and 1949 he was also a member of the Fylkesting of Sør-Trøndelag. He was elected to the Norwegian Parliament in 1949 and held his mandate until his resignation in 1977. As Minister of State, he led a center-right coalition made up of four parties. He was president of the Odelsting (one of the two branches of the Norwegian parliament), was group leader of the Center Party and its president from 1955 to 1967.
Borten's resignation as prime minister came because he had revealed secret information about Norway in the EC negotiations. After his resignation, however, he continued to be present in public and made particular statements on topics such as nuclear disarmament , the use of undercover agents and Norway's relations with the European Community . Under Borten, the Bondepartiet (farmers' party) changed into today's Center Party. He was an active opponent of Norway's accession to the EC.
