Life

Bondevik studied at the private theological college in Oslo and received his degree in 1975. In 1979 he was ordained as pastor of the Lutheran State Church. He is married to Bjørg Bondevik (née Rasmussen) and has three children.

Political career

From 1973 to 2005 Bondevik sat for the KrF in Storting . He was chairman of the parliamentary group several times between 1981 and 2001 and party chairman from 1983 to 1995. From 1983 to 1986 he served in Kåre Willoch's cabinet as Minister for Church and Education and from 1989 to 1990 under Jan P. Syse as Foreign Minister.

On October 17, 1997, he became prime minister of his country for the first time and was in front of a coalition of his party with the Center Party and the liberal Venstre Party . It was the first cabinet since 1973 that neither the Labor Party nor the conservative Høyre Party belonged to. It was seen as Eurosceptic and did not seek Norway to join the EU .

During his first term as prime minister, Bondevik attracted international attention in August 1998 when he admitted to suffering from depression . He was the highest-ranking politician to date to admit suffering from mental problems during his tenure. Anne Enger Lahnstein took over the official business for three weeks during his treatment. On March 3, 2000, he had to hand over the office to Jens Stoltenberg from the Labor Party after he had lost a vote of confidence in parliament in connection with the expansion of gas turbine power plants .

After the Labor Party suffered a severe setback in the 2001 parliamentary elections , Bondevik became Prime Minister for a second time on October 19, 2001. He led a minority government made up of the Christian People's Party, Conservatives and Liberal Venstre. In the elections on September 12, 2005, he lost to the opposition alliance of the Labor Party, Left Socialists and Center Party and was replaced again on October 17, 2005 by Jens Stoltenberg. Bondevik then said goodbye to Norwegian politics.

He is a member of the European Leadership Network .

Kjell Magne Bondevik is a nephew of Kristelig Folkeparti politician Kjell Bondevik , who was Minister of Social Affairs in the government of Prime Minister John Lyng in 1963 and Minister of Churches and Education in the government of Prime Minister Per Borten between 1965 and 1971 , and a cousin of his son Odd Bondevik , who was Bishop of Møre from 1991 to 2008 and President of the Church of Norway from 1998 to 2002 .
