Wenche Frogn Sellæg (birth name: Wenche Frogn * 12. August 1937 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian physician and politician of the conservative Høyre , the eight years as a member of the Storting , and between 1981 and 1983 Minister of the Environment and 1985-1986 Justice and Police Minister in the Government Willoch and Minister of Social Affairs in the Syse government from 1989 to 1990 .

Life

Studies and professional career as a doctor

Wenche Frogn, daughter of the manager Henry Frogn and the housewife Bergljot Osmundsen, began studying medicine at the University of Oslo after attending school in 1957, graduating in 1963 with the academic degree Candidata medicinæ (Cand.med.). She then worked at the Provincial Hospital ( Fylkessykehuset ) of Møre og Romsdal in Molde and then from 1965 to 1966 as a district doctor for Værøy and Røst .

After working as an assistant doctor at Ullevål University Hospital, Norway's largest hospital, between 1966 and 1968 , she worked as a reserve doctor at Drammen Hospital until 1971.

In 1971 Wenche Frogn Sellæg completed additional training in tropical medicine and hygiene at the University of London with a diploma and at the same time completed further training in internal medicine . After a year as a missionary doctor in Bhutan , she worked as a reserve doctor from 1973 to 1975 and then from 1975 to 1983 as an assistant senior physician at the hospital in Namsos .

In the mid-1970s Wenche Frogn Sellæg began her political career from 1974 to 1975 as chairwoman of the Høyre von Namsos city association and then between 1975 and 1979 as chairwoman of the cultural council of Fylke Nord-Trøndelag. During this time from 1977 to 1980 she also completed specialist training in gastroenterology . Between 1979 and 1983 she was a deputy member of the Overhalla municipality .

Member of the Storting and Minister in the Willoch government

After she was a deputy member of the Storting between 1981 and 1985, she was elected as a candidate for the Høyre for the first time as a member of the Storting in the 1981 parliamentary elections and represented the interests of Fylke Nord-Trøndelag until the parliamentary election on September 12, 1993 .

On October 14, 1981 Wenche Frogn Sellæg was appointed Minister of the Environment ( Statsråd, Miljøverndepartementet ) by Statsminister (Prime Minister) Kåre Willoch and held this ministerial office until she was replaced on June 8, 1983 by Rakel Surlien from the Senterpartiet (Sp).

At the same time she was a member of the working committee of the central board of the Høyre between 1982 and 1990, one of the highest bodies of her party. In addition to being a member of parliament, she also worked as an assistant doctor at the Rikshospitalet between 1983 and 1984 , and from 1984 to 1985 she was chair of the working time committee.

As part of a restructuring of the Willoch government, she took over the post of Justice and Police Minister ( Statsråd, Justis- og Politidepartementet ) from her party friend Mona Røkke on October 4, 1985 and held this post until the end of Willoch's term of office on May 9, 1986 . In this function, she was also chair of the inter-ministerial polar committee. During this time Gunnar Vada acted as their representative in the Storting.

After leaving the government, she was a member of the Church and Education Committee between May 1986 and October 1987 and a member of the Storting Finance Committee from October 1987 to September 1989. At the same time, she was first chairman of the program committee between 1987 and 1989 and then vice-chairman of Høyre from 1988 to 1990.

Minister in the Syse government and resumption of medical practice

On October 16, 1989, she was appointed Minister of Social Affairs ( Statsråd, Sosialdepartementet ) by Prime Minister Jan P. Syse in his government and held this ministerial office until the end of Syse's term on November 3, 1990. During this time Snorre Gundersen acted as their representative in the Storting.

After leaving the government, she was from November 1990 to September 1993 Vice-Chairman of the Stortingausschusses of Justice and from May 1991 to May 1993 and deputy chairman of the faction of Høyre in the Storting. She was also a member of the delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations from January 1992 to September 1993 . At the same time she was again a deputy member of the council of Overhalla municipality between 1991 and 1995 and chairman of the Høyre electoral committee from 1992 to 1994.

After further training in geriatrics in 1992, Wenche Frogn Sellæg became a senior physician in the medical department in 1993 and then a senior physician in 1999, before she was senior physician at the Namsos hospital between 2000 and 2002. As an expert in geriatrics, she was the chairperson of the reference group for the National Geriatrics Program from 1994 to 1999. Most recently she worked from 2002 to 2007 as a consultant geriatrics part-time at this hospital.

In addition to her professional work, she earned a degree in art history at the University of Bergen , which she in 2005 with a Bachelor and in 2007 with a Master ended.

Wenche Frogn Sellæg has been chairwoman of the Dementia Council in the National Association for Public Health since 2011 and chairwoman of the State Seniors' Council ( Statens Seniorråd ) since 2014 .
