The Bondevik I government formed the government of Norway from October 17, 1997 to March 17, 2000 . After the Labor Party missed Prime Minister Jagland's target of 36.9% (the vote in the 1993 election) with 35.0% in the 1997 parliamentary elections , Jagland resigned. Kjell Magne Bondevik , the parliamentary group leader of the Christian People's Party (KrF) formed a minority government together with the Center Party (Sp) and the liberal Venstre (V), which had 42 of 165 parliamentary seats.

After the defeat in a vote of confidence in connection with the construction of a new gas power plant, Bondevik resigned. A minority government of the Labor Party followed, led by Jens Stoltenberg .
