Dieter Nohlen

Dieter Nohlen (born November 6, 1939 in Oberhausen ) is a German political scientist who has researched primarily on questions of comparative government theory and on economic, social and political problems in the “ Third World ”. He was able to produce numerous, internationally influential publications on elections and electoral systems. In Germany he became known to a wide audience through partly multi-volume encyclopedias and handbooks on politics. Several of his writings have been translated into several languages. Nohlen also publishes in English and Spanish, especially in Latin American countries.

Life

Dieter Nohlen is the youngest of three sons of the businessman Otto Nohlen and his wife Wilhelmine, born. Brahm. In 1960 he obtained his Abitur at the municipal modern language grammar school in Oberhausen-Sterkrade .

Nohlen then studied political science , history and Romance studies at the Universities of Cologne , Montpellier and Heidelberg . Nohlen received his doctorate in 1967 under Dolf Sternberger and Werner Conze with the thesis "Monarchical parliamentarism and parliamentary government in 19th century Spain".

After years of research and teaching at the University of Heidelberg, he went to Chile from 1970 to 1973 as a representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation , where he taught at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO). He completed his habilitation at the University of Tübingen in 1973 with the text "Chile - The Socialist Experiment". The reviewer was Klaus von Beyme . Since 1974 Nohlen was Professor of Political Science at Heidelberg University . He turned down a call to Tübingen that he received in 1989. He has been retired since 2005. Since then he has held several visiting professorships in Spain and Latin America.

Nohlen is married to Andrea Ebbecke-Nohlen and has four children.
