Sonia Picado Sotela (born  December 20, 1936 in San José ) is a Costa Rican lawyer and politician who was a professor at the Universidad de Costa Rica from 1972 to 2003 and a judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from 1989 to 1994 . For her work she was awarded the United Nations Human Rights Prize and the Goler T. Butcher Medal , among other things .

Life

Sonia Picado Sotela was born in San José in 1936 and completed her legal training at the Universidad de Costa Rica , where she graduated in 1968. From 1972 to 2003 she was a professor at this university and from 1980 to 1984 as dean of the law faculty. Between 1984 and 1994 she also served as the Executive Director of the Inter-American Institute for Human Rights.

She also served as Judge and Vice-President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from 1988 to 1994 and as Ambassador of her home country to the United States from 1994 to 1998 . She is also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague . From 1998 to 2002 she represented the Province of San José as a member of the legislative assembly of Costa Rica for the Partido Liberación Nacional , of which she was President from 1999 to 2001 .

She has been a member of the jury of the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award since 2008 .

Awards

Sonia Picado Sotela received the Max Planck Research Prize in 1991 , the United Nations Human Rights Prize in 1993 and the Goler T. Butcher Medal of the American Society for International Law in recognition of her work, particularly in support of human rights . The Elmhurst College (2000), the University of Miami (2002) and Colby College (2003) awarded her the honorary doctorate .
