United Nations Human Rights Prize

The United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights (United Nations Human Rights Prize) is awarded since 1968 normally every five years on 10 December. It is intended to honor outstanding achievements in promoting and protecting human rights .

Excerpt from the ceremony provisions under Resolution 2217 Recommendation C of the General Assembly of the United Nations of 19 December 1966:

When should the Human Rights Prize be awarded?

The prize is to be awarded for the first time on December 10, 1968, at the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights . Thereafter, the award should not be awarded more often than in an interval of 5 years.

Number of prizes

No more than five awards may be given at a time. If only one prize is awarded, it is intended to be awarded for excellence in the field of human rights. With two awards, the first should be given for outstanding achievements in the promotion and protection of civil and political rights, the second for outstanding achievements in the promotion and protection of economic, social and cultural rights. If more than one award is awarded, all are equal.

Appearance of the price

The metal plaque must bear the symbol of the United Nations and an artist's representation, engraved with a corresponding quote. The prize is to be presented to the winner as a clear and permanent sign of the award.

Selection process

The selection committee - consisting of the President of the General Assembly , the President of the Economic and Social Council , the Chairman of the Sub-Commission on Human Rights , the Chairman of the Commission on Women's Rights and the Chairman of the Sub-Commission on Discrimination Prevention and Protection of Minorities - is responsible for the selection the award winner is commissioned. The committee should create its own rules for nominations, which the member states, specialized agencies and non-governmental organizations with advisory status and other relevant bodies make. The Secretary General can help in every phase of the selection process.

In 2008, he was the chairman of the advisory commission on human rights in place of the chairman of the sub-commission on the prevention of discrimination and protection of minorities in the selection committee.

  • Louise Arbor ( Canada ), High Commissioner for Human Rights, former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda , responsible for the first indictment against an incumbent head of state, here Slobodan Milošević
  • Benazir Bhutto (posthumous, Pakistan ), former Pakistani Prime Minister and a leading opposition politician. She is considered a passionate advocate for democracy and human rights. She was victim of an attack during the election campaign in Rawalpindi in December 2007.
  • Ramsey Clark ( USA ), a veteran human rights advocate and former Minister of Justice of the United States, is known for his steadfast insistence on respect for human rights and fair trial processes according to international standards
  • Carolyn Gomes ( Jamaica ), Director General and Co-Founder of the Jamaicans for Justice , the first human rights group in Jamaica, develops national and international partnerships to advance the human rights cause
  • Denis Mukwege ( Congo ) Co-founder and operator of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu , South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On average, ten to twelve women come for treatment, many of them need major operations. Dr. Mukwege describes sexual violence as a weapon in the region's war that is destroying the entire community.
  • Sister Dorothy Stang (posthumously, Brazil ) of the Soeurs de Notre Dame de Namur was murdered in 2005 in Anapu , Brazil. Despite numerous death threats, Sister Dorothy defended the rights of the poor, landless and indigenous peoples in the Anapu region for nearly 40 years.
  • Human Rights Watch , which has documented human rights abuses around the world for 30 years; played a key role in the campaigns for an International Criminal Court, the ban on landmines and the ban on cluster bombs
