Murlidhar Devidas Amte ( Marathi : मुरलीधर देवीदास आमटे , Muralīdhar Devīdās Āmaṭe ; * December 26, 1914 in the state of Maharashtra ; † February 9, 2008 in Chandrapur , Maharashtra), called Baba Amte ( बाबा आमटे , Bābā Āmaṭe , dt. "Father's Office") ), was an Indian human rights activist.

Life

Amte was the eldest son of a wealthy Brahmin . He became a journalist, went hunting and drove sports cars. During the holidays he came in Shantiniketan in contact with the writings of Rabindranath Thakur and Sewagram with Mohandas Gandhi , who impressed him very much. Office became a lawyer in Warora . In 1942 he organized lawyers for the leaders during the "Quit India" movement and was therefore imprisoned. In 1946 he married Indu Ghuleshastri. On the day of his wedding he gave up his law firm, renounced his property and inheritance claims. A student of Gandhi, who gave him the title "Abhayasadhak"awarded. He and his wife founded an ashram in Chandrapur for leprosy sufferers, the disabled and members of ethnic minorities. 5000 people now live in Anandwan. Together with Medha Patkar , Amte founded the Narmada Bachao Andolan organization , which fights against the Narmada dam project.

In 2007 he was diagnosed with leukemia . He died in 2008 in a clinic he founded himself.
