Carolyn Gomes

Carolyn Gomes (born March 30, 1958 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is the co-founder and director general of the human rights organization Jamaicans for Justice . In 2008 she received the United Nations Human Rights Award .

Life

Carolyn Gomes was born on March 30, 1958, to Denise Mitchell Thwaites, also a doctor. She received her PhD in medicine from the University of the West Indies in 1980 and married fellow student Richard Gomes in May 1980. As early as the 1980 elections, she exercised her civil rights and guarded the ballot boxes. From 1980 to 1986 she worked with her husband in Trinidad . After her return she specialized as a pediatrician and practiced as an independent pediatrician from 1989 to the end of 2002 . She has four children.

The turning point in her life was the gas riots on April 16, 1989. On October 15, 1989, she and other fellow activists founded the activist group Jamaicans For Justice (Jamaicans for Justice). In November 2002 she took over the management as general director. On December 10, 2002, she and her fellow campaigners were awarded the internationally renowned human rights prize of the city of Weimar . In 2008 she was honored with the United Nations Human Rights Prize. In 2009 she was awarded the Order of Jamaica . Gomes was also a member of a jury of well-known personalities that selected the universal logo for human rights .

To promote social awareness of human rights in Jamaica, she signed on April 12, 2012, a grant agreement between Jamaicans for Justice and the Federal Republic of Germany for the project “Human Rights Awareness Marketing and Promotionals Campaign”, in which Germany is involved with a grant from $ 62,000 involved.
