Jamaicans for Justice is a Jamaican non-governmental organization based in Kingston that works to strengthen civil and human rights in Jamaica. It was founded in 1999 by doctor Carolyn Gomes and is considered Jamaica's largest human rights organization.

Goals and way of working

Jamaicans for Justice relies on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights . Their central demands are the equal treatment of all citizens in Jamaican courts, the reduction of corruption , the containment of unlawful police violence and the elimination of discrimination . Equality between men and women and the decriminalization of homosexuality play a central role in this .

Jamaicans for Justice provides legal advice and judicial assistance to victims of state violence or injustice such as wrongful arrest, unfair trial and violent assault by security forces. The organization aims to raise awareness of human rights through an educational program in schools. She offers special training for candidates for police service. She also educates people on civil rights issues with the weekly radio program The Community Lawyer . Jamaicans for Justice also lobbies the Jamaican government.

The association works with international organizations, including Amnesty International and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights .

To promote social awareness of human rights in Jamaica, on April 12, 2012 the organization signed a grant agreement with the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the then German ambassador Josef Beck , for the project "Human Rights Awareness Marketing and Promotionals Campaign" Germany participated with a grant of 62,000 dollars.

Awards

Jamaicans for Justice has received several international awards. In 2002 the organization received the city ​​of Weimar's human rights award . The founder, Carolyn Gomes, was honored with the United Nations Human Rights Award in 2008 .
