Țăndărei [ t͡səndəˈrĕi ] is a city in Ialomița County in Romania .

Location of Țăndărei in Ialomița County

Țăndărei is located in the Wallachian Plain on the Ialomița river , in the Bărăgan steppe. The district capital Slobozia is located about 25 km southwest of Țăndărei.

history

Țăndărei was first mentioned in 1594. In 1864 it received the status of a rural community. At the end of the 19th century, Țăndărei became an important railway junction in eastern Romania. A new settlement ( Țăndărei Gară ) developed around the station . Between 1938 and 1944 the place was electrified. In 1968 Țăndărei was declared a city. The main industries are agriculture, food and construction.

population

In 1861 there were 261 houses and 310 households in Tăndărei. In 1874 one recorded 1235 inhabitants. In the 2002 census, the city registered 12,462 inhabitants, including 10,715 Romanians and 1731 Roma .

traffic

Țăndărei is an important railway junction; from here lines lead to Urziceni in the west, Făurei in the north and Constanța in the southeast. There are good bus connections to Slobozia and Buzău . National roads 2A and 21A run through Țăndărei.
