Slobozia [ sloboˈzja ] (German outdated: free city ) is a city in Romania and the district capital of Ialomița .

In 2003 it had about 52,600 inhabitants and is located on the Bărăgan plain, one of the warmest climates of Romania.

history

The city developed from and on the area of the former village of Vaideei . This older name means something like "woe to them" ( vai de ei ). The current place name Slobozia comes from the Slavic word slobod and means "freedom". Since the city lies in the middle of a flat plain, it was defenseless against the invasion of Tatars and Ottomans . To encourage farmers to settle in Slobozia, some taxes were waived for them, hence the name "freedom".

economy

The main industries in the region are agriculture, processing of agricultural products, and light industry.

Culture

In 1990 a cultural center was inaugurated that bears the name of the conductor and composer Ionel Perlea . The building houses stages, exhibition rooms, bookshops and other cultural institutions. In 2000 Ionel Perlea was converted into a UNESCO cultural center.

The city is the seat of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Slobozia and Călărași, founded in 1993 .

At the 2002 census, 97.6% of the population were ethnic Romanians and 2.2% were Roma. 98.6% were Romanian Orthodox, 0.4% were Seventh-day Adventists, and 0.2% were Roman Catholic.
