Doina Spîrcu

Doina Tudora Spîrcu (birth name Doina Craciun ; born July 24, 1970 in Slobozia ) is a former Romanian rower who won six medals, including two gold medals, at World Championships and Olympic Games.

Athletic career

In 1988 she was junior world champion in a four-man with a helmsman , and in 1992 she won the (unofficial) U23 world championships in a double scull . Doina Spîrcu made her breakthrough in the adult class at the 1995 World Championships when she won the silver medal behind the US boat with the Romanian eighth . At the 1996 Olympic Games , the US rowers only achieved fourth place, while the Romanians won by over four seconds over the boats from Canada and Belarus.

At the 1997 World Championships , Doina Ignat , Ioana Olteanu , Doina Spîrcu and Anca Tănase rowed from eighth of the previous year to the silver medal in the four without a helmsman , while the other three also competed in eighth, Doina Spîrcu had to forego the double start. She only returned to the Romanian eighth in 1999 and won the title at the 1999 World Championships . In 2000 she received the bronze medal in the four without helmsman at the world championships in the non-Olympic boat classes. At the Olympic Games in 2000 Doina Spîrcu competed in double fours and finished ninth. In 2001 she won another silver medal at the world championships in Lucerne with eighth place .
