Elena Georgescu

Elena "Nuți" Georgescu , née Elena Nedelcu , (born April 10, 1964 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian rower . With three Olympic gold medals and one silver medal, the helmswoman is one of the most successful rowers.

Career

Elena Nedelcu was attending a Lyceum in Bucharest when she was discovered for rowing at the age of 15 by Ilie Sarenco, the coach of Metalul Bucharest. She later started for Dinamo Bucharest . In 1983 Elena Nedelcu took part in the world championships for the first time.

At the Olympic Games in 1992 , the Romanian eighth won silver behind the boat from Canada. Apart from Georgescu, only Ioana Olteanu was again in the Olympic eight-final four years later. From 1996 to 2004, the Romanian eighth won the Olympic gold medal three times in a row. With Elisabeta Lipă , Doina Ignat , Liliana Gafencu and Elena Georgescu, four athletes took part in all three Olympic victories.

Under her birth name Elena Nedelcu became world champion in eighth place in 1990 and won bronze in 1991. As Elena Georgescu, she sat in the Romanian world champion eighth in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and in 2003 she was runner-up behind the German boat with eighth. In 2007 the Romanian eighth with Georgescu was again vice world champion. At the European Rowing Championships 2007 in Poznan , the title was also won. In 2008 , Georgescu won her last Olympic medal, a bronze, with the Romanian eighth and then retired from active competitive sport.

Elena Georgescu is married and had a daughter in 1993. She has been working at the Bucharest passport office since 2009.

Awards

In August 2008 Elena Georgescu received the Order of Merit "Meritul sportiv" III from President Traian Băsescu . Class with two stripes.
