Birgit Schütz

Birgit Schütz (born October 8, 1958 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) is a former rower from the GDR . She won Olympic gold in eighth place in 1980 .

Birgit Schütz trained at SG Dynamo Potsdam under Heinrich Mederow . After being runner-up in 1977, she won the GDR championships in 1978 in both four and eight. At the 1978 World Championships in Hamilton , New Zealand, the GDR eighth competed in the line-up of Silvia Arndt , Renate Neu , Dagmar Bauer , Gabriele Kühn , Petra Köhler , Henrietta Ebert , Birgit Schütz, Christiane Köpke and helmsman Marina Wilke and took second place behind the eighth from the Soviet Union.

After Birgit Schütz failed to qualify for eighth in 1979, she was back in the crew in 1980. In the line-up of Martina Boesler , Kersten Neisser , Christiane Köpke, Birgit Schütz, Gabriele Kühn, Ilona Richter , Marita Sandig , Karin Metze and Marina Wilke, the eighth won the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow with one second ahead of the Soviet boat. For this success she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.
