Ioana Cristina Rotaru (born January 4, 1984 in Câmpulung Moldovenesc , Romania ; birth name Ioana Cristina Papuc ) is a former Romanian rower . She was Olympic champion in 2004 and is three times European champion .

Career

Rotaru celebrated its first international successes under her maiden name Papuc between 1999 and 2002 when she won five medals at the junior world championships. As a 17-year-old she was also used at the World Championships in Lucerne , where she took seventh place in the four without a helmsman . Then she aspired to the successful Romanian women's eighth and finished there in 2002 4th place. In the following year, however, she could not place eighth, instead she started in the double fours and finished 10th. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, she returned to back eighth and won the gold medal together with Rodica Șerban , Viorica Susanu , Aurica Bărăscu , Liliana Gafencu , Elisabeta Lipă , Georgeta Andrunache , Doina Ignat and helmsman Elena Georgescu .

After the games, many of the very successful Romanian rowers of the Goldachters ended their careers, since apart from Rotaru and Șerban they had already been active in rowing for many years. Rotaru was therefore consistently in the Romanian eighth in the following years, and won silver medals at the World Championships in 2005 and 2007 . At the same time, she started in a further boat class at the World Championships in 2006 and 2007, which is usually only done by very strong rowers. At the 2008 Summer Olympics , Rotaru fully concentrated on eighth and won the bronze medal in Beijing behind the USA and the Netherlands. In addition, she achieved two successes with eighth at the newly introduced European Rowing Championships in 2007 and 2008 .

Rotaru ended her international rowing career with the bronze medal from Beijing. However, in 2012 for the next Olympic Games she appeared again and qualified directly for the Romanian women's eighth. He had meanwhile won some World Cup medals and all European Championships since 2007, but could only take fourth place with Rotaru in London. When the Romanian eighth in Varese won the European Championship in 2012 , Rotaru was involved again.

Rotaru started for the Marina CSS association . At a height of 1.83 m, she had a competition weight of 79 kg.
