Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Beard , after marriage Betsy Stillings , (born September 16, 1961 in Baltimore ) is a former American helmswoman in rowing , who was 1984 Olympic champion with the eighth .

The 1.55 m tall Betsy Beard replaced Valerie McClain-Ward as helmsman in the US eighth in 1984 . At the Olympic Games in 1984 , the US boat won with six runners-up world champions from the previous year as well as Jeanne Flanagan , Kathryn Keeler and Betsy Beard with a one-second lead over the Romanians. At the 1985 World Championships , only Flanagan and Beard from the Olympic boat were in the US eighth, who finished fourth, three tenths of a second behind the Romanians, gold and silver went to the Soviet Union and the GDR. Also in 1986 in Nottingham , the Soviet eighth won ahead of the GDR boat and the Romanians, the fourth-placed Americans crossed the finish line two seconds after the Romanians. After seven world titles in a row, the Soviet woman roller occupied in the 1987 World Championships , only the third place, it won the Romanians ahead of the controlled Beard US eighth. In the final of the Olympic Games in 1988 , the East German eight won ahead of the Romanians and the Chinese boat, while the US eight took sixth place.

Betsy Beard married the Olympic medalist John Stillings .
