Karin Metze

Karin Metze (born August 21, 1956 in Meißen ) is a former German rower.

At first Metze played volleyball quite successfully . In 1970 and 1971 she was able to become a student champion with her team SG Dynamo Meißen , and in 1972 she was Spartakiade winner . When women's rowing became Olympic for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal , Metze also switched to rowing in 1973, as instructed by her coach.

Karin Metze started now for the BSG unit Meißen , later for the SC unit Dresden where she was trained by Richard Wecke and Dieter Grahn . From 1976 she was part of the GDR national team and was initially employed in a four-man team with a helmsman. With this boat, she won the first ever Olympic gold medal in women's rowing. In 1977 she moved to eighth. In 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1982 she was world champion in the boat class, vice world champion in 1978 and third in world championships in 1983. In Moscow , she was able to win her second Olympic gold in eighth place at the 1980 Summer Olympics . Due to the GDR's Olympic boycott, she was unable to take part in her third Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 . The last international start was on the Rotsee in Lucerne . Then Metze ended her sporting career. In 1976 and 1980 she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. In 1984 she received this bronze medal.

Metze is a trained business clerk and after her career studied economics of mechanical engineering at the industrial institute of the TU Dresden. After completing her studies, she became a clerk in the personnel department at the Heidenauer machine factory. She married in 1988 and took her husband's name and had a daughter in 1989. She now lives in Heidenau and works as a commercial clerk in a telephone directory publisher in Dresden.
