The Rotsee , also outdated Rootsee , is a 2.5 kilometer long and up to 250 meter wide lake near the city of Lucerne in the Swiss canton of Lucerne . The area of the lake is a local recreation center, the shore areas are nature reserve. The outflow of the Rotsee is the Ron , this flows through the Rontal past Ebikon and Dierikon and finally flows into the Reuss at Root .

The railway line Zug – Lucerne of the SBB runs along the north bank as a single track .

use

The lake is very well suited for rowing regattas: with a length of 2.5 kilometers and its straight shape, it forms a natural regatta course - the international competition distance for rowing is 2000 meters. The lake is bordered by gentle hills and is thus protected from the wind, the flow and thus the current are minimal. The natural lake offers such good competition conditions that it is also called “Lake of Gods” in rowing circles.

The Rowing World Lucerne (also known as the Rotsee Regatta ) takes place annually on the Rotsee as one of the three events of the Rowing World Cup , one of the most important rowing regattas in the world. Rowing regattas have been held on the Rotsee since 1933. The rowing world championships were held here in 1962, 1974, 1982 and 2001 .

The Rotseelauf is also held annually. In 2019, the ten-kilometer run will be held for the 50th time.

geology

The Rotsee is a typical glacier edge lake . In an interglacial period it was meanwhile the bed of the Reuss .

«Frozen Sea»

In cold winters, the lake occasionally freezes over completely, so that the ice can be released by the authorities for walking and skating. The last time there was a sea frost in 1986 and February 2012 .
