The Rontal is a valley in the canton of Lucerne that stretches between the Rotsee and the confluence of the Ron in the Reuss .

Geography and geology

The Rontal runs from the Rotsee in a northeasterly direction parallel to the Reuss valley and ends in Root after about 7 kilometers in this. The communities Ebikon , Dierikon and Root lie in the valley floor and are traversed by the Ron. The municipality of Buchrain is located on the northern slope of the Rontal , the southern border of which runs along the Ron.

From a geological point of view, the Rontal lies on the border between the Alps and the Central Plateau , which is why the valley is limited to the north by rather gentle slopes, while there are steep slopes in the south.

A large part of the soil contains Nagelfluh and sandstone deposits , the latter were mined in large quantities along the Rooterberg in the 19th and 20th centuries

traffic

Streets

The Kantonsstrasse K 17 Luzern - Honau runs through the Rontal , which is the main traffic artery of the Rontal and is part of the main road 4 . The Rontal is connected to the A14 motorway from Ebikon and Dierikon at the Buchrain exit via the K 65 and K 65b . The Gisikon-Root motorway junction is also located directly at the northern end of the Rontal. The Rontal can also be reached via the K 17b Dierkon – Udligenswil through the Götzental .

Public transport

In the Rontal there are a total of four train stops with the Ebikon and Gisikon-Root stations and the Buchrain and Root D4 stops. They are all served by the S-Bahn line S1 Baar – Luzern – Sursee every half hour.

The bus lines 22 Luzern Bahnhof – Ebikon – Perlen, 23 Luzern Bahnhof – Ebikon – Root, 26 Ebikon Ottigenbühl – Adligenswil –Luzern Brüelstrasse and 111 Ebikon – Inwil – Waldibrücke and during rush hour the line 29 Küssnacht am Rigi –Root D4 in the Rontal also operate. The Gisikon-Root station is also served by bus routes from Sins , Rotkreuz and the Seetal .

It is planned to create a bus hub at Ebikon train station in the next few years and to extend trolleybus line 1 to the Mall of Switzerland.

economy

Various larger companies have settled in the Rontal. These include the Schindler Elevator factory and Migros , with the headquarters of the regional Migros Cooperative in Lucerne and the distribution center. Furthermore, between Ebikon and Root there are almost all commercial areas along the main road, including the D4 Business Village and the Fildern area in the immediate vicinity of the Mall of Switzerland shopping center . The Rontal has a weekly local newspaper called rontaler , which reports on economy, politics and society in the region.

Cantonal development focus

In February 2001, structural planning for the cantonal development focus of Rontal began, with the canton of Lucerne also including the municipalities of Ebikon, Dierikon, Buchrain and Root and the most important landowners involved.

Today, the development focus, analogous to the other development focus areas in the agglomeration of Lucerne, is usually called Lucerne East based on the geographical location of the center of Lucerne , and the planning tasks are carried out by the LuzernPlus community association . In addition to the planning partners already mentioned, the neighboring communities of Gisikon, Honau and Inwil are also involved in the development of the Lucerne East area.

With the planned or now implemented projects in the Rontal, the number of residents is expected to increase from 25,500 in 2016 to 38,500 by 2030. The number of workplaces in the perimeter is to increase from 16,000 to 23,000 in the same period. In order to be able to cope with the associated increase in traffic , the overall traffic concept for Lucerne East was developed, which was open to public participation between January and March 2018.
