history
The place was first mentioned in 1243 as Adelgeswiler . The place name is composed of the Ahd. Personal name Adalgis and the term -wīlāri , which is common in Alamannic foundations , to designate new court settlements.
Until the 13th century, Adligenswil, like the immediate vicinity of Lucerne, was under the care of the Lucerne Abbey and the Alsatian Murbach Monastery . In 1291 Lucerne fell to the Habsburgs . The Meierhof Adligenswil was sold to Habsburg by the Murbach Monastery in 1291 and Lucerne acquired it in 1395/1406. In the period between the Battle of Morgarten (1315) and the Battle of Sempach (1386), the Habsburg influence gradually declined. In 1406 Lucerne acquired the manor over the Habsburg Bailiwick, to which Adligenswil also belonged. In 1861 Adligenswil became its own parish.
population
From 1798 to 1970 the population grew only slowly from 433 to 953 residents and Adligenswil thus preserved the character of a rural farming village . At the beginning of the 1970s, the first construction activity began, which increased more and more from 1975 and continued until 2010. Since then the number of inhabitants has decreased slightly. At the end of 2017 the community had 5,343 inhabitants. With around 5,300 inhabitants, Adligenswil is manageable and has retained its rural charm. People know each other and maintain contact with each other. The numerous residential areas with no through traffic are typical of the village . Thanks to this unique location away from the major traffic axes and the proximity to the city, Adligenswil enjoys great popularity as a residential community.
