Ruben Estephan Vargas Martinez (born August 5, 1998 in Adligenswil ) is a Swiss football player who is under contract with Bundesliga club FC Augsburg and is a Swiss national player.

Ruben Vargas spent his junior years at FC Adligenswil , SC Kriens and FC Luzern .

In the summer of 2017 he made the leap into the first team of FC Luzern in the Super League. On May 10, he signed his first professional contract with FC Luzern until the end of June 2020. Vargas made his debut in the Swiss Super League on August 27, 2017 at the home game against FC Zurich , where he was substituted on. On March 7, 2018, Vargas extended his contract early until the end of June 2021. On April 2, 2018, Vargas scored his first Super League championship goal for FC Luzern in a 3-1 home win against FC St. Gallen . On January 7, 2019, Vargas extended his contract with FC Luzern early until the end of June 2022.

Bundesliga club FC Augsburg signed him for the 2019/20 season and provided him with a contract valid until June 30, 2024. On the 2nd match day he scored his first Bundesliga goal on August 24, 2019 in the home game against Union Berlin and on the 3rd match day away against Bremen his first double.

National team

He is a member of the Swiss U21 and senior national team . He made his debut for the U21s on October 16, 2018 in the European Championship qualifier against the national team for Wales , when he came on for João Oliveira in the 59th minute . Vargas made his first appearance for the A-Team on September 8, 2019 after a substitution in the 4-0 win over Gibraltar .
