Rani Khedira (born January 27, 1994 in Stuttgart ) is a German - Tunisian soccer player . He is under contract with FC Augsburg .

He is mainly used as a defensive midfielder , but occasionally also as a central midfielder . In his youth, Khedira played mostly at VfB Stuttgart and completed his first years in professional football there until 2014. He is a 13-time junior national player of the DFB and the brother of the former national soccer player Sami Khedira .

Life

Khedira was born in Stuttgart as the youngest of three sons of a German and a Tunisian who met in the Tunisian city of Hammamet . He grew up with his brothers Sami and Denny in Fellbach - Oeffingen . He completed an apprenticeship as a sports and fitness clerk . Khedira has both German and Tunisian citizenship, but (as of November 2017) does not speak Arabic .

Club career

youth

In his childhood, Khedira moved from TV Oeffingen to VfB Stuttgart , where he first played for the VfB U-17 team and scored two goals in 19 games in the 2009/10 season. The team finished the season in second place before they were eliminated in the semi-finals against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the U-17 Bundesliga finals. In the 2010/11 season he played 24 games for the Stuttgart U-17 team, in which he scored ten goals. This season they became champions of the U-17 Bundesliga South / Southwest, but failed again in the semi-finals, this time against SV Werder Bremen . In the same season he made his debut on March 19, 2011 (19th matchday) in the VfB U-19 team in a 1-1 draw against Karlsruher SC . For the 2011/12 season, he was promoted permanently to the U-19 team and played twelve of 13 possible games in the first half of the season.

VfB Stuttgart

At the beginning of the second half of the season, Khedira made his professional debut for VfB Stuttgart II on January 28, 2012 (23rd match day) in the 3rd division against FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt and from then on remained an integral part of the second team, in which he played twelve games completed the second half of the season. On October 23, 2012, he moved up to the squad of the Bundesliga team of VfB. However, he continued to play in the third division with the second team, where he became a regular under coach Jürgen Kramny and completed 32 games. For the first time in the Bundesliga squad he was on January 19, 2013 (18th matchday) in the 0-2 defeat against VfL Wolfsburg , but was not substituted on. On January 28, 2013, Khedira extended his contract early until the end of June 2015.

Khedira made his Bundesliga debut in the 2013/14 season on September 1, 2013 (4th matchday) in a 6-2 home win over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , when he came on for William Kvist in the 79th minute. On September 8, 2013 (8th matchday) he scored his first professional goal when he took the lead in the 4-0 win against Wacker Burghausen . From then on he shuttled back and forth between the second team and the Bundesliga team, although in the first half of the season he was mostly only used in the 3rd division and only played twice in the Bundesliga. At the beginning of the second half of the season, Khedira moved into the starting line-up for the injured Christian Gentner and started five times in a row in the Swabian defensive midfield. After Gentner's return, he slipped back into the second line and came only to two more substitutions, before he was initially out due to a muscle injury and then his season was ended prematurely because of a hamstring . At the end of the season there were nine first division and twelve third division appearances.

RB Leipzig

During the summer break of 2014, he moved to RB Leipzig . In his first season, Khedira prevailed as a regular player and only missed one game due to a yellow card suspension until matchday 21. In February 2015, he tore his ankle ligament and was out for around ten weeks. On May 17, 2015 (33rd matchday), he made his comeback in the 1: 2 defeat against FC Ingolstadt . He made a total of 22 appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga and two games in the DFB Cup .

At the beginning of the new 2015/16 season, the defensive midfielder lost his regular place and only made three of twelve possible appearances by the end of October. In the meantime he played in the second team in the regional league. As a result, Khedira fought her way back to the team and then mostly shuttled between the starting eleven and the bench. In the game against VfL Bochum (3: 1) on April 3, 2016, he tore a muscle in his adductors and was out for three weeks. With the club he rose to the Bundesliga in 2016; he had made 19 appearances in the league and one in the DFB Cup.

Under the new coach Ralph Hasenhüttl , who came from FC Ingolstadt for the 2016/17 season , Khedira finally lost his regular seat and from then on mostly only sat on the bench, as Diego Demme and Naby Keita or Stefan Ilsanker mostly played in defensive midfield. He made ten appearances in the Bundesliga, both in the 4-1 win against Hertha BSC on May 6, 2017 (32nd matchday) and a week later in the 4-5 defeat against FC Bayern Munich on 13 May 2017 (33rd matchday) an own goal. His appearance against FC Bayern was his last for RB Leipzig, with whom he was runner-up at the end of the season. His contract expired at the end of the season.

FC Augsburg

At the beginning of June 2017, Khedira made a free transfer to Bundesliga competitor FC Augsburg , with whom he received a four-year contract. There he soon developed into a regular player and usually formed the double six at FCA together with Daniel Baier . On March 17, 2018 (27th matchday) he scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 3-1 home defeat against Werder Bremen . Khedira was also a regular in the 2018/19 season, but mostly switched between the central defender and sixth position. In the 2019/20 season he played again mostly in defensive midfield and sometimes even took on the role of captain of Augsburg.

National team

Khedira wore the national shirt for the first time on May 21, 2009 in Viersen in the U-15 national team's 2-0 victory over the United States. For the U-16s he made his debut on August 14, 2009 in Eschen in a 4-2 victory over Switzerland. For the U-17 he came on April 13, 2011 in Novi Sad in the 0-1 defeat against the selection of Serbia. From June 18 to July 10, 2011 he took part with the U-17 national team in the World Cup in Mexico . Of the seven encounters until the German team advanced to the game for third place, he played five (four times as a substitute); for the first time on June 23 in Queretaro in the 3-0 victory over the selection of Burkina Faso. On his debut for the German U-19 national team on November 14, 2012 against France, Khedira scored his first goal in the DFB jersey.

Due to his father's origins, Khedira would also have been eligible to play for Tunisia . First he made it clear that he would not consider this, but after the national team had qualified for the 2018 World Cup and the Tunisian Association contacted Khedira in the course of its search for professionals in Europe, he considered this option before finally canceling. The reasons for the rejection were, among other things, that he did not have the appropriate language skills (see section "Life" ), he had no relation to the team and that he did not want to take away anyone who played in the World Cup qualification.
