Tomáš Koubek (born August 26, 1992 in Hradec Králové , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech football goalkeeper who has played for the Czech Republic since 2016 and for Bundesliga club FC Augsburg since 2019 . From 2017 to 2019 he was active at the French first division club Stade Rennes . Previously he was under contract with Czech record champions Sparta Prague , but was temporarily loaned to league rivals Slovan Liberec .

Career

society

Koubek began playing football at FC Hradec Králové at the age of 14 . When the club was promoted to the first division in 2010 , he only made two appearances in his first season and thus had little part in ensuring that the newcomer was able to keep the class. In the next season he came to 13 league appearances, in which he remained four times without conceding a goal. Once again, the class could be held, albeit more closely than before. In 2012/13 he stayed four times in 20 league games without conceding a goal, but rose with his team from bottom of the table. In the following second division season he stayed six times in 13 games without conceding a goal and rose as a runner up again in the first division. There he remained six times without conceding a goal in 26 games, but rose again immediately as the table penultimate .

In 2015 he got a contract with Czech record champions Sparta Prague in July , but was initially only awarded to league rivals Slovan Liberec . As cup winners, Liberec qualified for the third qualifying round for the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League , which they survived the playoffs and reached the group stage. He conceded only one goal in four qualifying games. In the group stage he could only keep his goal clean twice and he was eliminated with his team as third behind Sporting Braga and Olympique Marseille . In the league , Liberec took third place, of which he had a small share with eight clean goalkeeper games out of a total of 25 games. In third place, they qualified for the third qualifying round for the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League , which began at the end of July 2016. In this he was again in goal for Sparta and helped to reach the group stage, in which the Czechs prevailed as group winners. The last stop was in the round of 16 against the Russian runner-up FK Rostov . For the 2017/18 season he moved to the French first division club Stade Rennes and became a regular goalkeeper there. In the 2018/19 season he won the French Cup with Stade Rennes .

On August 6, 2019, FC Augsburg announced the Czech's commitment. Koubek signed a five-year contract until June 30, 2024. In his first competitive game, he was eliminated with FC Augsburg against SC Verl in the first round of the DFB Cup. In the Bundesliga, the goalkeeper was able to concede for the first time in his ninth league game against VfL Wolfsburg . On the 25th matchday, the criticized Czech under head coach Martin Schmidt lost his place in goal to competitor Andreas Luthe , and Schmidt's successor Heiko Herrlich also stuck to the German.

National team

Koubek went through all Czech junior teams from the U19. With the U19 team, he survived the second qualifying round for the 2011 European Championship in May 2011 , conceding only one goal in three games. In the finals in July he only conceded once without conceding a goal, but reached the final with his team, which was only lost in overtime with 2: 3 against record champions Spain .

With the U21 he took part in the playoffs at the end of the qualification for the 2013 European Championship . After a 2-0 home defeat to Russia , the 2-2 in the second leg was not enough to reach the finals. In 2015 he then took part in the home European championships , but the team was eliminated in the group phase and thus missed participation in the 2016 Olympic Games .

In November 2015 Koubek was invited to the senior national team for the first time after qualifying for the Euro 2016 , but was not used in the two games. On March 24, 2016, he had his first appearance in an international A match in the friendly game that he lost 1-0 to Scotland . He was in the starting line-up and played for over 90 minutes.

On May 19, he was appointed to the provisional EM squad with 28 players and then also considered for the final squad. On May 27, he was substituted on for regular goalkeeper Petr Čech in the 6-0 test match against Malta in the second half and four days later nominated as the second substitute goalkeeper for the final EM squad. But it was not used. After the European Championships and the resignation of goalkeeper Petr Čech, Tomáš Vaclík became the new number 1 in the Czech goal for qualifying for the 2018 World Cup and Koubek only appeared in three friendly matches in which he remained twice without conceding. Since the Czechs missed the qualification, participation in the World Cup was initially not possible for him either.
